Biden\u2019s big Build Back Better bill, which contains climate change actions, has not yet been passed though the US Congress.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>We will demonstrate to the world the United States is not only back at the table but hopefully leading by the power of our example.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YMfUWb1Km7I?version=3&amp;rel=0&amp;showsearch=0&amp;showinfo=1&amp;iv_load_policy=1&amp;fs=1&amp;hl=en-US&amp;autohide=2&amp;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation\">[embedded content]<\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"h-brazilian-president-jair-bolsonaro-s-pre-recorded-speech\">Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro\u2019s (pre-recorded) speech<\/h3>\n<p>Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro gave a pre-recorded speech (he wasn\u2019t in attendance) in which what he said completely contradicted the country\u2019s recent actions:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Brazil is a green powerhouse. When it comes to fighting climate change, we have always been part of the solution, not the problem.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yet Brazil\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions rose 9.5% in 2020, and deforestation hit a 12-year high in Brazil\u2019s Amazon in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil\u2019s environment minister Joaquim Leite said the country would cut its emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, which is boosted from 43%. Leite also said that Brazil would formalize a commitment to become climate neutral by 2050 during COP26.<\/p>\n<p>AlJazeera <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/11\/1\/brazil-pledges-50-percent-emissions-cut-by-2030-in-change-of-tone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">notes<\/a>, \u201cAdvocacy group Climate Observatory said that a 50% reduction was still weaker than the 43% commitment using the pre-Bolsonaro baseline, meaning Brazil had not, in reality, increased its ambition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Environmentalists see Bolsonaro\u2019s speech <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/01\/do-not-trust-brazils-greenwashing-promises-say-amazon-activists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as a greenwash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed alignwide is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">One notable absence at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/COP26?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#COP26<\/a> this week is Brazil&#8217;s president Jair Bolsonaro who instead spoke in a pre-recorded video saying Brazil is part of the solution, not the problem when it comes to climate change. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VP0aI9CbF5\">https:\/\/t.co\/VP0aI9CbF5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Katy Watson (@katywatson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/katywatson\/status\/1455207244405121029?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 1, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"h-india-net-zero-by-2070\">India: net zero by 2070<\/h3>\n<p>India prime minister Narendra Modi announced that India will meet a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/nov\/01\/narendra-modi-pledges-india-will-reach-net-zero-emissions-by-2070\">target of net zero by 2070<\/a>. He also committed to India getting half of its energy from renewable resources by 2030 and increase its clean energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030.
