According to a report from <em>Automotive News<\/em> citing a dealer briefed on the matter, the BMW Group-owned automaker is asking retailers to accept a 3% cut in their profit margin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The cut would come out of the 6% \u201ctrade margin\u201d dealers get as the difference between a vehicle\u2019s invoice and its sticker price. <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/mini\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22mini%22%7D\">Mini<\/a> told dealers that it would lose money bringing the car to the US if they did not accept this margin reduction. According to Mini of the Americas vice president Michael Peyton,\u00a0the tariff issue is a \u201c<em>big deal.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve told the dealers we need to figure out how to make it happen. Why not in South Carolina, where BMW already operates a crossover assembly plant?<\/p>\n<p>Well, Peyton says that can\u2019t happen in the foreseeable future due to the absence of a supplier base. \u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"8\">\n<p>&#8220;Even if you were to say, &#8216;I&#8217;m going to ship all the parts in and build in [South Carolina],&#8217; it&#8217;s the same difference because I get a tariff on all those imported parts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Besides the small EV, BMW and GWM&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/339481\/bmw-teams-with-great-wall-to-build-electric-mini-in-china\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22339481%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22bmw-teams-with-great-wall-to-build-electric-mini-in-china%22%7D\">Spotlight Automotive joint venture<\/a> will also build an electric crossover smaller than the Countryman at the same plant in Zhangjiagang, China.
