Cruise did not specify who would qualify to ride, but\u00a0the company has not opened its driverless service to members of the general public yet.<\/p>\n<p>Now, imagine someone hailing a ride using a smartphone app and a fully autonomous car arrives to pick them up minutes later, with no one in the driver\u2019s seat. Actually, you don\u2019t have to imagine that because Cruise co-founder, CTO and president Kyle Vogt, has become the first person to hail a driverless Cruise ride in San Francisco on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>Videos shared on Cruise\u2019s YouTube channel document the entire trip, and we have to say it&#8217;s really impressive, especially considering that this was the first ride without a human in the driver\u2019s or passenger\u2019s seat.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Cblockquote%20class%3D%22twitter-tweet%22%3E%3Cp%20lang%3D%22en%22%20dir%3D%22ltr%22%3E1)%20Monday%20night%20was%20a%20night%20I%E2%80%99ll%20never%20forget.%20I%E2%80%99m%20still%20speechless.%20I%20got%20to%20take%20the%20first%20ride%2C%20by%20anyone%2C%20ever%2C%20in%20a%20*driverless*%20robotaxi%20on%20the%20streets%20of%20San%20Francisco.%3Cbr%3E%3Cbr%3EThis%20was%20officially%20ride%20%231%20for%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2FCruise%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3E%40Cruise%3C%2Fa%3E.%20Full%20story%20and%20vids%20below.%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FGDjVcvMrvK%22%3Ehttps%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2FGDjVcvMrvK%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fp%3E%26mdash%3B%20Kyle%20Vogt%20(%40kvogt)%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fkvogt%2Fstatus%2F1455992698242953219%3Fref_src%3Dtwsrc%255Etfw%22%3ENovember%203%2C%202021%3C%2Fa%3E%3C%2Fblockquote%3E%20%3Cscript%20async%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fplatform.twitter.com%2Fwidgets.js%22%20charset%3D%22utf-8%22%3E%3C%2Fscript%3E\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>Kyle Vogt posted a series of tweets about the first driverless ride in a <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/340671\/cruise-struggles-but-progresses-toward-autonomous-chevy-bolt-evs\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22340671%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22cruise-struggles-but-progresses-toward-autonomous-chevy-bolt-evs%22%7D\">Cruise AV<\/a> (that particular car is named Sourdough), and was naturally excited about it.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>\u201cMonday night was a night I\u2019ll never forget. I\u2019m still speechless. I got to take the first ride, by anyone, ever, in a *driverless* robotaxi on the streets of San Francisco.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He went on to recount how the entire experience went smoothly, and pointed out how special it felt.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to explain, but without someone sitting in the driver\u2019s seat, the AV comes to life in a different way &#8211; almost like it has its own personality. I&#8217;d say Sourdough\u2019s driving gave off a gingerly yet confident vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>After Vogt was driven fully autonomously to his destination, he wanted to test the service further, so he requested five more rides that night, bringing along Cruise co-founder Dan Kan, SVP of Engineering Mo ElShenawy, and COO Gil West. \u201c<em>Smooth, flawless rides. It all\u2026 just worked,<\/em>\u201d he tweeted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re wondering why the rides happened at night, it\u2019s because the California DMV\u2019s \u201cdriverless deployment permit\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/449490\/cruise-approved-drive-without-driver-california\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22449490%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22cruise-approved-drive-without-driver-california%22%7D\">granted to Cruise in early October<\/a> stipulates that AVs can only operate driverless between 10 pm and 6 am and at a max speed of 30 mph (50 km\/h).<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the Cruise AV\u2019s first driverless ride in the video above, but make sure you also check out the video below.
