Known as the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/passat\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Passat<\/a> elsewhere in the world and sibling to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/03\/09\/junkyard-gem-1973-audi-fox-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the Audi Fox aka 80<\/a> (not to be confused with the later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/10\/10\/junkyard-gem-1990-volkswagen-fox-station-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Volkswagen Fox aka Gol<\/a>), Dasher sales continued in North America through the 1981 model year. Here&#8217;s one of those final-year Dashers, featuring five doors and an oil-burning engine, found in <a href=\"http:\/\/andersensales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">a northeastern Colorado self-service yard<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/04190347\/14-1981-Volkswagen-Dasher-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Passat sales continued here for 1982, of course, but <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Volkswagen_Passat_(B2)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the B2 Passat<\/a> received <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XX6tJUxKHiM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Quantum badging on our shores<\/a>. I&#8217;m not sure what the add-on switches bolted above the dash nameplate do, but this car features plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redgreen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Red Green<\/a>-style keep-it-going-for-another-day kludges.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/04190350\/18-1981-Volkswagen-Dasher-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>For example, the clever glue-and-tape-and-rope <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/auto-repair\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">repair<\/a> of the radiator hose.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/04190349\/17-1981-Volkswagen-Dasher-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The gasoline-powered Dasher had a 1.6-liter four-cylinder rated at 76 horsepower, which was about adequate for a 2,181-pound car of this era. This car has the 52-horsepower <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/diesel\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">diesel<\/a>, however, and I can tell you from bitter personal experience that the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/volkswagen\/diesel\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">VW diesels<\/a> of this period <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1877791\/introduction-volkswagen-diesel-misery-driver-training-class-1982\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">were pure misery on the road<\/a>. Still, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/fuel+economy\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">fuel economy<\/a> for the Dasher Diesel was spectacularly good for the time, pushing 50 miles per gallon on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/but-wait-theres-more\/a33439669\/because-55-was-just-too-fast-during-an-oil-shortage-50-mph-oldsmobile-sticker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">slow-motion highways<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2011\/05\/what-about-the-malaise-era-more-specifically-what-about-this-1979-ford-granada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Late Malaise Era<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/04190343\/08-1981-Volkswagen-Dasher-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">gold old four-on-the-floor manual transmission<\/a> kept things simple. If you wanted a\u00a0<em>really<\/em> simple floor-shifted manual in 1981, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">GM<\/a> had you covered; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34730466\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-floor-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Camaros and Malibus could still be purchased new that year with a three-on-the-floor manual tranmission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/04190344\/09-1981-Volkswagen-Dasher-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This car made it to 156,184 final miles, which was a long life for a car of its time. List price on the 1981 Dasher Diesel Wagon started at $8,740 (about $27,555 today).
