{"id":13106,"date":"2021-11-08T09:04:55","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T14:04:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/auto\/?p=13106"},"modified":"2021-11-08T09:04:55","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T14:04:55","slug":"apple-hires-tesla-autopilot-engineer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=13106","title":{"rendered":"Apple Hires Former Tesla Autopilot Software Director CJ Moore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apple hired former <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%7D\">Tesla<\/a> engineer Christopher \u201cCJ\u201d Moore for its self-driving electric car project.<\/p>\n<p>According to people with knowledge of the matter cited by <em>Bloomberg<\/em>, Moore is working on the software side of the program and reports to Stuart Bowers, another former Tesla executive who joined Apple at the end of last year.\u00a0Bowers was the head of Tesla\u2019s Autopilot team before he departed in mid-2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The latest signing suggests Apple is moving ahead with the development of self-driving technology. Moore is joining a division known for its secrecy\u2014Apple has never publicly announced its car plans\u2014and frequent employee turnover.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Field, who headed the Apple car project (codenamed <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/461571\/apple-car-sale-september-2021\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22461571%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22apple-car-sale-september-2021%22%7D\">Project Titan<\/a>) from the start, left the company earlier this year to lead technology efforts at Ford. Apple recently replaced Field with Kevin Lynch, who led software engineering for the Apple Watch from the product\u2019s very early stages.<\/p>\n<p>Other major names from the automotive world hired by Apple include <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/513449\/apple-hires-bmw-exec-ev\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22513449%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22apple-hires-bmw-exec-ev%22%7D\">Ulrich Kranz<\/a>, the former CEO of autonomous car startup Canoo and a former BMW manager who led the i3 and i8 programs, Tesla\u2019s former drivetrains chief Michael Schwekutsch, and Tesla\u2019s ex interiors head Steve MacManus.<\/p>\n<div itemscope=\"\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/ImageGallery\" class=\"msnt-photo-thumb-gallery inline \"> <meta itemprop=\"name\" content=\"Motor1 Apple Car Renderings\"\/> <meta itemprop=\"thumbnailUrl\" content=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<div class=\"msnt-photo-thumb-gallery-main-photo\"> <a href=\"\/photo\/5395122\/apple-car-rendering-by-motor1\/\" class=\"msnt-photo-thumb-gallery-main-photo-box\"> <picture class=\"lazy\"><source type=\"image\/webp\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/PvjQ2\/s1\/apple-car-rendering-by-motor1.webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/custom\/share\/placeholder_0.jpg\"><source type=\"image\/jpeg\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/PvjQ2\/s1\/apple-car-rendering-by-motor1.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/custom\/share\/placeholder_0.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/custom\/share\/placeholder_0.jpg\" alt=\"Apple Car rendering by Motor1\" data-src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/mgl\/PvjQ2\/s1\/apple-car-rendering-by-motor1.jpg\" class=\"desaturate\"\/> <\/source><\/source><\/picture> <\/a> <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"value\">5<\/span> <span class=\"label\">Photos<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Interestingly, the latest Tesla engineer to join Apple, Christopher \u201cCJ\u201d Moore, drew controversy this year for remarks about Tesla\u2019s Autopilot feature.\u00a0Interviewed by California Department of Motor Vehicles as part of investigations into the self-driving software, Moore implied that CEO Elon Musk had overstated the capabilities of the Autopilot software.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When asked about Musk\u2019s January 2021 claims that Teslas would be <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/348985\/tesla-full-self-driving-capable-this-year\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22348985%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-full-self-driving-capable-this-year%22%7D\">capable of fully autonomous driving this year<\/a>, Moore replied that Musk\u2019s statements didn\u2019t \u201c<em>match engineering reality,<\/em>\u201d according to a DMV memo summarizing the conversation.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla\u2019s current Level 2 system requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel, but for several years Musk has been saying he believes Tesla is close to releasing so-called Level 5 autonomy features, which would allow the cars to operate without human intervention.<\/p>\n<p>Moore&#8217;s LinkedIn page still lists him as working for Tesla, where he held the position of Autopilot Software Director since November 2019.
