{"id":13123,"date":"2021-11-08T12:04:04","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T17:04:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/auto\/?p=13123"},"modified":"2021-11-08T12:04:04","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T17:04:04","slug":"1134093_report-genesis-gv70-ev-headed-for-alabama-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=13123","title":{"rendered":"Report: Genesis GV70 EV headed for Alabama production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Hyundai\u2019s Genesis luxury brand is planning to make a fully electric version of its new GV70 crossover in the U.S. starting early next year, according to a report from <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=80409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Korea<\/a>,<\/em> citing plans revealed to the labor union at a home-market plant.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If the timing is as reported, the GV70 EV would be the first fully electric model from the broader Hyundai Motor family, or affiliated Kia brand, to be made in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>As of yet, this isn&#8217;t a plan Genesis Motor North America could confirm to <em>Green Car Reports<\/em>\u2014although it has already confirmed the GV60 electric crossover and a production version of the Electrified G80 sedan.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Genesis EV reportedly isn\u2019t the only one planned for production at Alabama in the near future. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1132377_10-reasons-the-2022-hyundai-ioniq-5-is-irresistible\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Ioniq 5<\/a> is arriving soon, followed early next year by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1131744_2022-kia-ev6-with-tesla-model-y-beating-acceleration-and-charging-the-stinger-of-evs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kia EV6<\/a> and then later next year by the somewhat smaller <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133725_2023-genesis-gv60-up-close-with-facial-recognition-and-a-drift-mode-it-s-luxury-with-hijinks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genesis GV60<\/a>, and then an Ioniq 7 SUV that\u2019s being previewed this month at the LA auto show as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134066_hyundai-seven-ev-concept-will-bow-in-la-previews-ioniq-7-due-in-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Seven concept<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">All three of those models are due to be built on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1130487_ev-platform-hyundai-kia-genesis-bi-directional-charging-robotaxi-ready\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyundai\u2019s 800-volt E-GMP global platform<\/a> for EVs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100767240_m\" title=\"2022 Genesis GV70\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 Genesis GV70\" width=\"640\" height=\"349\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"559\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/genesis_100767240_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/genesis_100767240_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/genesis_100767240_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/genesis_100767240_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/genesis_100767240_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/genesis_100767240_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 Genesis GV70<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The GV70 is based on the Genesis G70 sport sedan and the Kia Stinger performance hatchback, a possible indication that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1128326_kia-stinger-sport-sedan-might-switch-to-electric-hints-design-boss\">the Stinger could evolve to be all-electric<\/a>, as suggested in 2020.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Like Hyundai\u2019s Kona EV, the GV70 EV would likely be a niche electric model sold in relatively low numbers. However, it could help lay the groundwork for larger-scale U.S. EV production from the company once a local supply chain has been secured for high-cost items like battery cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Hyundai announced in May that it planned to make a $7.4 billion investment in the U.S. by 2025 toward EV production, upgrades to production facilities, and smart mobility.
