{"id":13127,"date":"2021-11-08T10:03:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-08T15:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/auto\/?p=13127"},"modified":"2021-11-08T10:03:56","modified_gmt":"2021-11-08T15:03:56","slug":"ford-ceo-praises-tesla-internal-meeting-no-one-does-ev-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=13127","title":{"rendered":"Ford CEO praises Tesla in internal meeting: &#8216;No one does EV better&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ford CEO Jim Farley has praised Tesla in a recent internal meeting and he didn\u2019t mince his words about the EV space.<\/p>\n<p>He made it clear that Tesla does electric vehicles better than anyone, and that Ford needs to respect that.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-210186\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4655152367470280\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Lately, Tesla\u2019s rise in valuation has made it undeniable that the market values its leadership in the electric vehicle sector. So much so that even competing automakers are starting to be more vocal about how seriously they take Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>We recently reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/11\/05\/vw-ceo-explains-why-be-more-like-tesla-giga-berlin-manufacturing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VW CEO Herbert Diess explaining to his employees in a speech why Tesla has such an important lead<\/a> in electrification.<\/p>\n<p>Now Farley basically did the same in an employee meeting speech that has been <a href=\"https:\/\/amp.freep.com\/amp\/6250863001\">publicly released<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>If Ford was a trillion-dollar company, our stock would be worth about $250 a share. Think about the value creation of Tesla right now. And they have resources, smart people, the Model 3 is now the best-selling vehicle in Europe. Not electric. Flat out. It was the best-selling vehicle in the UK. Most months, it\u2019s the best-selling vehicle in California. Not just electric, but overall. If we\u2019re going to succeed, we can\u2019t ignore this competition anymore.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ford wasn\u2019t necessarily ignoring Tesla before,<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2019\/11\/17\/great-artists-steal-why-fords-mustang-mach-e-was-inspired-by-tesla-in-all-the-right-ways\/\"> you can see from the Mach-E that Ford\u2019s designers were paying attention<\/a>, but it certainly seems to be paying more attention now.<\/p>\n<p>Farley then laid out three specific points that help Tesla tremendously in accelerating EV adoption.<\/p>\n<p>First off, and maybe the most surprising for a legacy automaker to admit, Farley acknowledged Tesla\u2019s direct-sale model as an advantage:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Look at Tesla, why are they doing what they\u2019re doing and what can we learn from them. First, they have a direct model\u2026 There\u2019s no one in between. They make it so easy. Three or four clicks configuring the vehicle with not a lot of complexity to delivering it to the customer. Simple, non-negotiated pricing. A large reservation system as well as remote service.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Ford on the other hand has been having significant issues with its dealer partners price gouging, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2020\/06\/23\/ford-dealers-marking-up-mustang-mach-e\/\">sometimes charging upwards of $15,000 over MSRP<\/a> on Ford advertised prices.<\/p>\n<p>The second point that Farley made is probably the most important one: Tesla\u2019s electric powertrain expertise:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Second, Tesla maximizes use of electrons in the vehicle.\u00a0<em>No one<\/em>\u00a0does it better than they do. Their customers pay less for a better battery. Their focus \u2026 after they launch the vehicle,\u00a0<em>their obsession<\/em>\u00a0after the launch of the vehicle, to make the customer experience better, to re-engineer the electronic components, to simplify, to address quality based on data coming off the vehicles, to reduce the bill of material based on how people actually use the vehicle, to drive vertical integration, so they do\u00a0<em>more<\/em>\u00a0and they solve the hardest problems at Tesla. And they manage every electron so they can be as efficient as possible with the expense of battery.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The third point is Tesla\u2019s simplicity, which Farley says enables it to scale fast and cheap: <\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Third, the product itself is highly differentiated from the rest of the ICE field and complexity is tiny, compared to OEMs. That allows them to have enormous reuse. Reuse that we\u2019ve never seen in our ICE business. Tesla can scale quickly because of that complexity reduction. They can drive cost down, which they have. They can keep processes simple.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Farley appeared to be noting these points about Tesla to encourage employees to appreciate what Tesla does right as Ford itself moves to produce more electric vehicles \u2013 starting with the F-150 Lightning next year.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s take:<\/h2>\n<p>That $1+trillion valuation is catching the attention of legacy automotive CEOs in ways that they\u2019ve been able to brush off before. CEO Farley, just like VW boss Diess, is right. Disruption is happening right now and the automobile industry in a few years is going to look much different than it does now.
