{"id":13344,"date":"2021-11-12T00:01:07","date_gmt":"2021-11-12T05:01:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/auto\/?p=13344"},"modified":"2021-11-12T00:01:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-12T05:01:07","slug":"toyota-zero-emissions-climate-pledge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=13344","title":{"rendered":"Toyota skips zero-emissions pledge, says world&#8217;s not ready"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO \u2014 Large parts of the world are not ready for zero-emission vehicles, which is why <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/TM\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\" rel=\"noopener\">Toyota Motor Corp<\/a> did not sign a pledge this week to phase out fossil-fuel cars by 2040, the world&#8217;s largest automaker said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Six major carmakers, including <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">General Motors<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Ford<\/a>, Sweden&#8217;s <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Volvo<\/a> Cars and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/daimler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Daimler AG&#8217;s<\/a> Mercedes-Benz, signed the Glasgow Declaration on Zero Emission Cars and Vans, as did a number of countries including India.<\/p>\n<p>But <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Toyota<\/a> and No. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/polestar\/2\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">2<\/a> global automaker <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Volkswagen<\/a> AG, as well as crucial car markets the United States, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">China<\/a> and Germany, did not.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for Toyota told Reuters that where the energy and charging infrastructure, economics and customer readiness exist, &#8220;we are ready to accelerate and help support with appropriate zero-emission vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, in many areas of the world such as Asia, Africa, Middle East &#8230; an environment suitable for promoting full zero <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/emissions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">emission<\/a> transport has not yet been established,&#8221; the spokesperson said. &#8220;We think it will take more time to make progress &#8230; thus, it is difficult for us to commit to the joint statement at this stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to a study published by the Munich Mobility Show in April, there are huge global disparities in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">electric vehicle<\/a> ownership.<\/p>\n<p>Sales are soaring in the European Union, China and the United States.<\/p>\n<p>But cumulative <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">electric car<\/a> registrations through 2020 in South America, with a population of more than 420 million, were below 18,000.<\/p>\n<p>And registrations in Africa, home to 1.2 billion people, were exclusively in South Africa and totaled just 1,509 cars through 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Volkswagen also said the tempo of electric vehicle adoption would &#8220;vary from region to region&#8221; and Chief Executive Herbert Diess dismissed the zero-emission pledge at a conference on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It could still make sense to use synthetic fuel cars in Latin America in 2035,&#8221; Diess said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TOKYO \u2014 Large parts of the world are not ready for zero-emission vehicles, which is why Toyota Motor Corp did not sign a pledge this week to phase out fossil-fuel cars by 2040, the world&#8217;s largest automaker said on Thursday.
