You could chalk it up to metro Detroit being a company town, but that\u2019s too easy. The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/maverick\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Maverick<\/a>, despite its modest size, has presence.<\/p>\n<p>I expected the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">truck<\/a> to draw curiosity. Aesthetically, the Maverick\u2019s closest rival, the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2022-Hyundai-Santa+Cruz\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz<\/a>, is far more eye-catching with a flashy grille and curves and creases front to back. The Maverick\u2019s squared-off truck demeanor makes it an understated attention-getter, and it does have some design flourishes, especially up front with the blocky headlights that Tetris with the grille.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just the looks. The sub-$20K MSRP offers real value\u00a0and is an articulation of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Ford<\/a>\u2019s strategy to pivot from cars to similarly sized offerings. This is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/06\/09\/ford-maverick-car-replacement\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">better than a Ford Focus<\/a>, and it makes sense why Ford took such a big risk revamping its lineup. And the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/10\/21\/2022-ford-maverick-hybrid-epa-fuel-economy-rating-announced\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">hybrid version gets up to 42 mpg.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ford sold 4,140 Mavericks in October, outpacing the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hyundai\/santa+cruz\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Santa Cruz<\/a>\u2019s still-healthy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hyundainews.com\/en-us\/releases\/3432\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">tally of 1,848 units<\/a>. Ford says the trucks were moving off <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">dealer<\/a> lots in an average of five days, which is a brisk pace. The Maverick is also bringing in young buyers, with a quarter of its sales to people 18 to 35 years old.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While the sales figures are interesting, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/12\/2022-ford-maverick-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Maverick starts about $4,000 less<\/a> than the Santa Cruz, and Ford sells more vehicles than <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hyundai\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Hyundai<\/a> in the United States, so that\u2019s just part of the equation. Ford and Hyundai will define success for their small trucks in different ways. They\u2019re both attention-getters, but the Maverick surprised me with its star power. It will be interesting to see if this segment has staying power for Ford, Hyundai and perhaps others.<\/p>\n<h2>Other news and notes<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/06\/01\/2022-vw-golf-gti-first-drive-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\"><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/19114522\/PXL_20210512_003911063-1.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year Award<\/strong> finalists <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/press-releases\/nactoy-reveals-finalists-for-2022-awards_33495\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">were announced this week<\/a> at the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/la-auto-show\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Los Angeles Auto Show<\/a>, and the Maverick and Santa Cruz both made the cut in the truck category, where they were joined by the Rivian R1T.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/civic\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Honda Civic<\/a>, Lucid Air and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/golf+gti\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Volkswagen Golf GTI<\/a>\/R\u00a0 will vie for top honors in the car segment. The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/bronco\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Ford Bronco<\/a>, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/genesis\/gv70\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Genesis GV70<\/a> make up the SUV field. Winners will be announced in early January. The finalists were culled from a field of 23 semifinalists. <em>Full disclosure: I\u2019m a NACTOY juror<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/13\/lamborghini-countach-lpi8004-reveal-sian-hybrid\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\"><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/11\/19113928\/Countach-LPI800-4_BiancoSiderale11.jpg\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s an odd one: Famed designer Marcello Gandini<\/strong> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/10\/26\/lamborghini-countach-marcello-gandini-comments\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">disavowing the rebirth<\/a> of the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lamborghini\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Lamborghini<\/a> Countach. <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lamborghini\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Lambo<\/a> essentially restyled the Sian with a modern interpretation of the Countach\u2019s design cues. It\u2019s a limited-run piece with just 112 copies, so it\u2019s hardly a revival of the wedge-shaped demon that captured the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/supercars\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">supercar<\/a> zeitgeist from 1974-1990. Gandini penned the original, and it&#8217;s one of the many highlights in his legendary career.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Gandini put out a scathing statement saying he had no role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/13\/lamborghini-countach-lpi8004-reveal-sian-hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">new Countach<\/a>. Oddly, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamborghini.com\/en-en\/news\/new-countach-lpi-800-4-gandini-borkert-design-perspective\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">appeared in a video<\/a> where he discusses Countach styling with Lambo\u2019s current head of design, Mikja Bokert, and a model of the new Countach is presented to Gandini.<\/p>\n<p>Gandini\u2019s statement says he took it as simply a model, and nothing more, and Lambo (in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/original-lamborghini-countach-designer-gandini-distances-himself-new-lpi-800-4\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">statement to <em>Top Gear<\/em><\/a>) notes that its most famous designer had no role in the current car.
