{"id":13773,"date":"2021-11-20T00:03:44","date_gmt":"2021-11-20T05:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/auto\/?p=13773"},"modified":"2021-11-20T00:03:44","modified_gmt":"2021-11-20T05:03:44","slug":"1134227_ford-drops-its-plans-to-develop-evs-with-rivian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=13773","title":{"rendered":"Ford drops its plans to develop EVs with Rivian"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Rivian, the truck-focused EV startup, might not play as much of a role in the future of Ford\u2019s electric-vehicle strategy as had been previously indicated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/automakers-suppliers\/ford-rivian-cancel-plans-jointly-develop-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span id=\"changed-htmldiff-0\">Automotive News<\/span><\/em><\/a> interview cited by the publication Friday, Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed that plans are off for the two companies to develop future EVs together.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cWe want to invest in Rivian\u2014we love their future as a company\u2014but at this point we&#8217;re going to develop our own vehicles,&#8221; said Farley, who just on Thursday announced plans to effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134216_ford-doubles-ev-production-target-for-late-2023-will-it-take-the-lead-after-tesla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">double Ford\u2019s EV production plans through 2023<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford and Rivian had planned to co-develop a Lincoln electric SUV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1126212_rivian-based-lincoln-electric-suv-will-result-from-ford-partnership-according-to-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">based on Rivian\u2019s skateboard platform<\/a> <span id=\"added-htmldiff-0\">and expected, based on industry reports, to be closely related to the Rivian R1S<\/span>. Then in April 2020, the automaker confirmed that while that project was off, it was still engaged with Rivian for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1127986_rivian-built-lincoln-electric-suv-project-canceled-due-to-current-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">future \u201calternative vehicle\u201d<\/a> based on the platform.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100680059_m\" title=\"Rivian R1T, R1S chassis\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Rivian R1T, R1S chassis\" width=\"640\" height=\"337\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"540\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-r1t-r1s-chassis_100680059_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/rivian-r1t-r1s-chassis_100680059_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-r1t-r1s-chassis_100680059_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-r1t-r1s-chassis_100680059_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/rivian-r1t-r1s-chassis_100680059_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/rivian-r1t-r1s-chassis_100680059_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rivian R1T, R1S chassis<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford owns about 12% of Rivian, and has invested in the EV startup as recently as earlier this year; yet in the perverse valuation of the EV-tech stock market, Rivian currently has a market valuation greater than Ford.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">As of the end of October Rivian reported that it had produced 180 R1T pickups. Ford sold about 4.2 million vehicles last year.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ford also until recently had a seat on Rivian\u2019s board. In the <em>Automotive News<\/em> interview, Farley pointed out that this is not a soured relationship, and called it \u201csome of the best cooperation we\u2019ve had with another company.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100680195_m\" title=\"Rivian R1S\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Rivian R1S\" width=\"640\" height=\"384\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"615\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-r1s_100680195_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/rivian-r1s_100680195_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-r1s_100680195_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/rivian-r1s_100680195_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/rivian-r1s_100680195_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/rivian-r1s_100680195_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Rivian R1S<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In the report, Farley pointed to the difficulties in marrying Rivian\u2019s electric architecture with Ford\u2019s embedded software, hinting that the business models are going to be somewhat different.<\/p>\n<p>That difference in strategy could be pushed to its extreme with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1132727_this-charging-tech-will-help-optimize-ford-f-150-lightning-pro-and-other-fleet-evs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ford\u2019s Pro fleet EVs<\/a>, as it aims to make money in fleet management tools, offsetting what will, early on, be smaller margins on EVs.
