{"id":14106,"date":"2022-01-28T12:03:40","date_gmt":"2022-01-28T17:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=14106"},"modified":"2022-01-28T12:03:40","modified_gmt":"2022-01-28T17:03:40","slug":"ford-mustang-gt3-race-car-2024-imsa-v8-multimatic-msport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=14106","title":{"rendered":"Ford Mustang GT3 race car planned for 2024 IMSA season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Ford<\/a> has announced it&#8217;s getting into the GT3 racing class, and it&#8217;s doing so with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/12\/16\/2021-ford-mustang-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">a Mustang<\/a>. The car will be entering the 2024 IMSA series in the GTD and GTD Pro classes, but as a GT3 car, it will be eligible to compete in international GT3 classes.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/mustang\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Mustang<\/a> GT3 is being developed with two big-name racing companies with lots of Ford experience: Multimatic and M-Sport. Multimatic is one of the prime developers of the race car, and it will be managing the two factory-backed cars in IMSA. Other cars will be run by customer teams. Multimatic worked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2015\/11\/19\/ford-gt-racer-la-auto-show\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">previous Ford GT LM race cars<\/a> as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/01\/ford-bronco-dr-baja-race-truck-v8-multimatic-sema\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Bronco DR off-road-only SUV<\/a>. It also makes those fantastic spool-valve shocks fitted to the road-going <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/gt\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Ford GT<\/a> and the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/colorado\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Chevy Colorado<\/a> and Silverado ZR2s. M-Sport is known for Ford&#8217;s rally cars, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/07\/08\/ford-puma-wrc-hybrid-crossover-rally-car\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">the new Puma hybrid WRC car<\/a>, and they&#8217;re in charge of the engine.<\/p>\n<p>That engine will be a race-ready version of the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 we all know and love in the current Mustang GT. It&#8217;s paired with a rear-mounted transaxle, which is one of the big departures from the road car. Besides the different transmission setup, the car features unique short-long arm suspension at all four corners. The body has many <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/carbon+fiber\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">carbon fiber<\/a> components, and of course, the race car has all kinds of aero aids.<\/p>\n<p>Something that has us curious is whether this GT3 car will be based on the current Mustang, or if it will instead be the next-generation car. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/14\/2024-ford-mustang-spy-photos\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">We&#8217;ve seen spy shots of a new one<\/a>, so we know there&#8217;s a replacement in development. The timing would be good for a new Mustang, too: the current one will be nearly a decade old in 2024 \u2014 plus that year will be the Mustang&#8217;s 60th anniversary. Time will tell.<\/p>\n<p>And one final note: Ford also has a new Mustang GT4 race car coming in 2023. That class is more production-based than the faster GT3 class.
