Sure, you&#8217;ll have a much easier time finding the E36 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/08\/13\/junkyard-gem-2001-bmw-325xi-e46-wagon-with-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">E46 versions<\/a> of BMW&#8217;s 3 Series in your local <a href=\"https:\/\/ewepullet.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Ewe Pullet<\/a>, and even the E90s are showing up in quantity these days, but I still see plenty of 1984-1991 E30s during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">my junkyard travels<\/a>. Here&#8217;s a nimble four-banger E30, spotted at a Silicon Valley yard last summer.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/01\/24230908\/13-1985-BMW-318i-in-California-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The M10 four-cylinder BMW engine goes way back, all the way to the early 1960s. 2002s had M10s, as did the very first 3-Series: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/04\/17\/junkyard-gem-1977-bmw-320i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">the 320i<\/a>. This one is a 1.8-liter rated at 101 horsepower; that&#8217;s quite a bit less than the 121 horses in the 325e of the same year, but it also made the car 150 pounds lighter.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/01\/24230904\/09-1985-BMW-318i-in-California-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A surprisingly large proportion of U.S.-market E30s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/04\/06\/junkyard-gem-1991-bmw-325i\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">had automatic transmissions<\/a>, but this one has the base five-speed manual.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/01\/24230911\/15-1985-BMW-318i-in-California-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 1985 318i four-door sedan had a list price of $16,925, with the two-door priced at $16,430 (that&#8217;s about $44,725 and $43,420 in 2022 dollars, respectively). Moving up to the six-cylinder 325e four-door that year meant spending at least $21,105 (around $55,775 today). If you&#8217;d headed to your local Toyota <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">dealer<\/a> in 1985, you could have bought a brand-new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/01\/toyota-ae86-heritage-parts-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">AE86 Corolla GT-S<\/a> for $9,298, which meant 112 horsepower in a car that weighed 131 fewer pounds than the 318i.
