{"id":14212,"date":"2022-01-30T09:02:30","date_gmt":"2022-01-30T14:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=14212"},"modified":"2022-01-30T09:02:30","modified_gmt":"2022-01-30T14:02:30","slug":"1134912_ford-mustang-gt3-coming-in-2024-to-tackle-imsa-sportscar-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=14212","title":{"rendered":"Ford Mustang GT3 coming in 2024 to tackle IMSA SportsCar Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ford Mustang is finally set to enter the IMSA SportsCar Championship, with the car&#8217;s first season of competition locked in for 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The Blue Oval on Friday announced plans to develop a Mustang GT3 race car in partnership with Multimatic, the Canadian motorsport and engineering company that builds Ford&#8217;s GT supercar, as well as the more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1134043_2023-ford-bronco-dr-price-specs-review-photos-info\">Bronco DR racer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The plan is to run a factory team fielding two of the Mustang GT3s in\u00a0IMSA&#8217;s GTD Pro class, meaning the Mustang will be going up against race cars based on the likes of the Aston Martin Vantage, Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, and Porsche 911. Baldauf\/SB-Medien<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The 2024 arrival date points to the Mustang GT3 being based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1118467_2024-ford-mustang-spy-shots\">the redesigned Mustang<\/a>, which is out testing in prototype form and expected on sale in 2023 as a 2024 model. The teaser shot of the race car may hint at some design elements destined for the redesigned Mustang.<\/p>\n<p>Ford also plans to offer the Mustang GT3 to customer teams, meaning we could see them compete in other GT3 competitions around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Ford is short on specs but said the car will feature a unique version of the current Mustang GT&#8217;s 5.0-liter V-8. The engine is being developed by Ford Performance and will be supplied by M-Sport, the British motorsport and engineering company responsible for recent Ford rally cars, including the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1134697_hyundai-first-to-reveal-contender-for-wrc-s-hybrid-era\">Ford Puma-based car<\/a> competing in the 2022 World Rally Championship.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100679078_m\" title=\"2018 Ford Mustang GT\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2018 Ford Mustang GT\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2018-ford-mustang-gt-premium_100679078_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2018-ford-mustang-gt-premium_100679078_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2018-ford-mustang-gt-premium_100679078_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2018-ford-mustang-gt-premium_100679078_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2018-ford-mustang-gt-premium_100679078_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2018-ford-mustang-gt-premium_100679078_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2018 Ford Mustang GT<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Mustang GT3 will also feature unequal length double wishbone suspension front and rear, a rear-mounted transaxle gearbox, carbon-fiber body panels, and of course an aero package developed to meet GT3 rules.<\/p>\n<p>Joey Hand, one of the class-winning drivers in Ford&#8217;s 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans campaign, will serve as a test and development driver for the program, alongside his current NASCAR duties.<\/p>\n<p>Ford also announced on Friday that it is also developing a new Mustang GT4 race car to replace the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motorauthority.com\/news\/1052027_ford-unveils-mustang-gt4-customer-race-car-at-2016-sema-show\">current one launched in 2016<\/a>. The new Mustang GT4, like its predecessor, will be offered as a customer race car.
