{"id":14229,"date":"2022-01-31T00:05:56","date_gmt":"2022-01-31T05:05:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=14229"},"modified":"2022-01-31T00:05:56","modified_gmt":"2022-01-31T05:05:56","slug":"1134911_porsche-taycan-goes-coast-to-coast-with-just-2-5-hours-of-charging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=14229","title":{"rendered":"Porsche Taycan goes coast-to-coast with just 2.5 hours of charging"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Porsche has announced that it\u2019s driven a Taycan from Los Angeles to New York City with less than two and a half hours of cumulative charging.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The trip covered 2,834.5 miles and included 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds of charging, with results certified by the Guinness World Records organization.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>That beats\u2014by a lot\u2014the previous record-holder, Kia, which announced in November it had set a record of just over seven hours for the route with its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134863_2022-kia-ev6-starts-at-42-115-gets-an-epa-rated-310-miles-in-some-versions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EV6 electric hatchback<\/a>. The previous record-holder, driving a Tesla, was on-record at nearly 13 hours of plugging in.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The record was accomplished by longtime efficiency-seeker and hypermiler Wayne Gerdes, and it illustrates an important point about the Taycan: Even though it\u2019s not particularly efficient among EVs, in terms of miles per kilowatt-hour, the Taycan\u2019s super-quick 800-volt fast-charging capability, when made part of the plan, can keep any charging stops very brief.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100827095_m\" title=\"Porsche Taycan coast-to-coast record for least charging time\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan coast-to-coast record for least charging time\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827095_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827095_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827095_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827095_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827095_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827095_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Porsche Taycan coast-to-coast record for least charging time<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Gerdes used PlugShare and the Electrify America app to plan out his route, with the majority of charge stops taking advantage of the Taycan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1120801_one-step-plugcharge-coming-to-electrify-america\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plug-and-Charge compatibility<\/a>, which automatically recognizes the car and account and takes the credit-card or fob scan out of the process.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The car Porsche used for the feat was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1129314_2021-porsche-taycan-can-add-features-over-the-air-fast-charge-without-fuss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 Porsche Taycan<\/a> with the larger 93.4-kwh pack\u2014denoted Performance Battery Plus\u2014as well as the Premium Package, bringing adaptive cruise control among other items.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>As such, that car receives a 225-mile EPA range rating, with a 2.11 miles\/kwh efficiency rating\u2014which Gerdes found the Taycan easily beat both around town or at faster highway speeds. But he added that he didn&#8217;t do it at a hypermiling crawl; he covered a 1,430-mile stretch from Hesperia, California, to Vanita, Oklahoma in 21 hours and 5 minutes\u2014averaging nearly 68 mph, including charging stops.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Gerdes reported that the first time he charged the Taycan with a 350-kw unit, it went from 6% to 82% in just 22 minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Overall, the trip cost $76.82 of Electrify America charging\u2014far less than gasoline for the most efficient gas-fueled vehicle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100827086_m\" title=\"Porsche Taycan coast-to-coast record for least charging time\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Porsche Taycan coast-to-coast record for least charging time\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827086_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827086_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827086_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827086_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827086_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/porsche-taycan-coast-to-coast-record-for-least-charging-time_100827086_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Porsche Taycan coast-to-coast record for least charging time<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">On his <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cleanmpg.com\/community\/index.php?threads\/56827\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CleanMPG<\/a><\/em> blog, Gerdes submitted some feedback on the experience to Electrify America and, while his no-hitch experience allowed the record, he noted the constraints of the network: \u201cIt is doubtful it will ever reach the reliability of Tesla&#8217;s network as DCFCing at a small sample of the thousands of EA chargers currently installed nationwide is just a snapshot. There are too many competing interests, limited funds, and an ever-larger number of current and future OEMs with varying charger configurations that will be connecting to their network.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Porsche has already said that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133350_2022-porsche-taycan-charges-faster-on-road-trips-parks-itself-plays-well-with-android\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Taycan will charge even faster<\/a>, so there\u2019s an opportunity to cut some time off that record.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Who will be next?
