Lotus Cars and the battery supplier Britishvolt on Friday announced they\u2019re planning to co-develop \u201ca new battery cell package\u201d that will power future electric Lotus sports cars.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/strong>The new battery package\u2014unclear from the explanation whether it refers to a cell-to-pack strategy<\/a> or something else\u2014is going to prioritize fast-charging and the optimization of energy density and weight reduction.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/strong>With the announcement, Lotus included a rough first sketch (above) of the electric sports car, which it\u2019s previously codenamed Type 135\u2014with some clear nods to heritage models in Lotus\u2019 history like Esprit and Elan, alongside a version of its modern Elise sports-car profile.<\/p>\n

\u201cLotus is delighted to be collaborating with Britishvolt to develop new battery cell technology to showcase the thrilling performance that a Lotus EV sports car can deliver,\u201d said Lotus Cars managing director Matt Windle. The collaboration follows a 100-million-pound ($135 million) investment in facilities and manufacturing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Britishvolt is, as the name suggests, UK-based, and it claims to be \u201cthe UK\u2019s foremost investor in battery cell technologies and associated R&D to create homegrown intellectual property.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/strong>The battery supplier plans to have a capacity of 30 GWh by the end of the decade, and it\u2019s currently building a cell manufacturing facility at a former power-station coal stockyard.<\/p>\n

Lotus plans to offer only fully electric models by 2028, and it confirmed with the announcement that it plans to unveil the Type 132 electric SUV \u201cin the coming months,\u201d with three more EVs on the way<\/p>\n

Polestar, Volvo, and Lotus in-house developed 800-volt electric architecture and battery pack<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While the SUV will be built on the SEA platform<\/a> that will underpin the upcoming Polestar 3<\/a>, as well as models from Volvo, the focus on China, and Lotus\u2019 parent Geely, those other SUVs\u2014the sports cars\u2014will be built on a new Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture (LEVA)<\/a> that can accommodate single or dual-motor layouts with up to 671 kw combined (871 hp).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
