Last August, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/08\/04\/ac-ace-shelby-cobra\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">RM Sotheby&#8217;s offering a Ruddspeed Ace<\/a>, the English roadster that served as archetype for Shelby&#8217;s Cobra. Next month, at the Amelia Island Concours d&#8217;Elegance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodingco.com\/auction\/amelia-island-2022\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Gooding &amp; Co will put a 1967 Toyota 2000GT<\/a> on the block, chassis number MF10-100001. This was the first production model with a serial number to leave the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Toyota<\/a> line in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Japan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/japanesenostalgiccar.com\/2000gt-when-shelby-raced-the-toyotas\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">destined for Carroll Shelby&#8217;s California shop<\/a> for development to race in the 1968 SCCA Championship in the C\/Production class for imports. Toyota was making its name on <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">dealer<\/a> lots with economy cars, but wanted to win on Sunday against competitors like <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/alfa+romeo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Alfa Romeo<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/datsun\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Datsun<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lotus\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Lotus<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Nissan<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/porsche\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Porsche<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/triumph+motorcycles\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Triumph<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is one of three cars Shelby&#8217;s development team prepped for the series, helping to spend the $500,000 Toyota invested in the race program. Driver Davey Jordan piloted MF10-100001 to fourth in the championship that year, teammate Scooter Patrick finishing third behind the two <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/porsche\/911\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Porsche 911s<\/a> run by the Vasek Polak dealer team. That would usually be considered an outstanding result for a first-time campaign of a brand <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/research\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">new car<\/a> in an automaker&#8217;s first effort at a country&#8217;s national series. But Toyota didn&#8217;t want outstanding, it wanted the gold cup. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hagerty.com\/media\/car-profiles\/toyota-2000gt\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Retail customer 2000GTs cost $7,150<\/a>, which was about $2,000 more than a Porsche 911 or a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/jaguar\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Jaguar<\/a> XKE at the time, almost $3,000 more than a 1967 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/corvette\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">Chevrolet Corvette<\/a>. The Toyota&#8217;s slow sales were probably already helped <a href=\"https:\/\/tundraheadquarters.com\/shelby-racing-toyota-2000gt\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">by fantastic reviews<\/a> and its appearance in the 1967 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/james+bond\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">James Bond<\/a> film &#8220;<em>You Only Live Twice<\/em>,&#8221; but would likely have been aided by even more by headlines about beating <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/porsche\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Porsches<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drivingline.com\/articles\/davey-jordan-and-the-shelby-toyota-2000gt\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Jordan later said<\/a>, &#8220;Toyota lost a little bit of face and discontinued their racing efforts. There was no talk of going racing at all (in 1969).&#8221; Toyota quit the series at the end of 1968, and quit producing the 2000GT in 1970 after 351 had been built.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gooding &amp; Co says this example has been with the same family since 1980, making appearances at shows like the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercury\/monterey\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Monterey<\/a> Historics and the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/goodwood+festival+of+speed\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Goodwood Festival of Speed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, a four-rotor, Le Mans-class-winning 1989 Mazda 767B holds the record for the priciest Japanese car sold at auction, at $1.75 million. The auction house hasn&#8217;t provided a pre-sale estimate for the 2000GT yet, but this is the same car <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hemmings.com\/stories\/article\/bullet-train-toyota-2000gt\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">owned by Bob Tkacik and Peter Star<\/a> of Maine Line Exotics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2012\/01\/28\/first-toyota-2000gt-is-for-sale\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">put up for sale in 2012 for $1.7 million<\/a> yet not getting any takers, apparently.
