{"id":15092,"date":"2022-02-10T12:04:35","date_gmt":"2022-02-10T17:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=15092"},"modified":"2022-02-10T12:04:35","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T17:04:35","slug":"new-volvo-electric-crossover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=15092","title":{"rendered":"New electric Volvo crossover on the way, to be built in the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autonews.com\/cars-concepts\/new-volvo-ev-crossover-will-be-built-south-carolina\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\"><em>Automotive News<\/em> reports<\/a> that <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Volvo<\/a> has a new electric <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/crossover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">crossover<\/a> coming, the intel relayed by &#8220;two sources familiar with the plans.&#8221; Said to be codenamed V546 at the moment, the new product is said to slot in between the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/xc60\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">XC60<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/xc90\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">XC90<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If size is a factor in its tweener placement, the XC60 is 185 inches long, the XC90 195 inches long, so the V546 could be about the length of the 189-inch <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/edge\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Ford Edge<\/a>. The sources claim it will ride on a new electric platform, which could be SPA2 bones that will support the coming electric XC90 and that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/06\/30\/volvo-concept-recharge-electric-crossover-future-technology\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Concept Recharge electric crossover study<\/a> (pictured) sits on. The Swedish automaker debuted the Concept Recharge in June last year as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/19\/volvo-concept-recharge-sustainable-materials\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">template of future styling cues, sustainable materials<\/a>, and advanced infotainment and autonomous technology. The <em>AN<\/em> piece says we&#8217;ll see that some design and tech transfer into the V546.<\/p>\n<p>Out of a global production of about 100,000 units, 40% will be allotted to Volvo&#8217;s plant in Ridgeville, South Carolina, to serve the North American market, starting in early 2025. That leaves an available capacity of 110,000 units out of the plant&#8217;s 150,000-unit annual cap. The four-year-old plant builds just the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/s60\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">S60<\/a> sedan at the moment \u2014 turning out roughly 23,000 units last year \u2014 but is transitioning to an all-EV assembly operation. Before the V546 arrives in three years, the Ridgeville facility will add the battery-electric version of the next-generation XC90, thought to be called the Embla, and the battery-electric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/12\/02\/polestar-3-preview-ev-suv-prototype\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Polestar 3<\/a>, both hitting the market in 2023. Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson has said Ridgeville will &#8220;be the only plant in the [Volvo Cars Group] which only makes full-electric cars.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And although it&#8217;s fallen off the radar, we&#8217;re still anticipating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/05\/11\/volvo-xc100-recharge-report\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">new flagship XC100<\/a> to debut in 2023 as well. <em>AN&#8217;s<\/em> Future Product Pipeline says the top model will come in six- and seven-seat layouts akin to what <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/bmw\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">BMW<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/land+rover\/range+rover\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Range Rover<\/a> do, with the six-seater bolting up captain&#8217;s chairs in the second row.
