It&#8217;s an\u00a0<strong>113% increase<\/strong> year-over-year, compared to <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/487143\/global-ev-battery-market-2020\/\">134.5 GWh estimated for 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Batteries for commercial xEVs, energy storage systems or other applications are not included in the numbers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Battery capacity deployment increase appears to be slightly quicker than the increase of vehicle sales, because besides the increase in the number of battery packs, also the average battery capacity continues to increase.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tag\/catl\/\">CATL<\/a> took a clear lead in 2021, over LG Chem&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tag\/lg-energy-solution\/\">LG Energy Solution<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tag\/panasonic\/\">Panasonic<\/a>. The three biggest players have a total market share of about <strong>67.4%<\/strong> (compared to 71% in 2020).<\/p>\n<p>With almost <strong>87.8 GWh<\/strong> deployed (<strong>up 204%<\/strong> year-over-year), CATL controls close to a third (<strong>30.7%<\/strong>) of the entire passenger xEVs battery market. CATL&#8217;s business is mostly focused on China.<\/p>\n<p>LG Energy Solution noted a <strong>72%<\/strong> year-over-year increase to <strong>63.5 GWh<\/strong>, which is enough for <strong>22.2%<\/strong> share. Most of the sales were reported in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Panasonic also increased its volume (by<strong> 39%<\/strong> year-over-year) to <strong>41.4 GWh<\/strong>, which is <strong>14.5%<\/strong> of the total. Most of the sales fall on North America.<\/p>\n<p>The top battery cell manufacturers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CATL &#8211; 87.8 GWh (30.7%)<\/li>\n<li>LG Chem&#8217;s LG Energy Solution &#8211; 63.5 GWh (22.2%)<\/li>\n<li>Panasonic &#8211; 41.4 GWh (14.5%)<\/li>\n<li>BYD &#8211; 24.2 GWh (8.5%)<\/li>\n<li>Samsung SDI &#8211; 15.1 GWh (5.3%)<\/li>\n<li>SK Innovation&#8217;s SK On &#8211; 14.6 GWh (5.1%)<\/li>\n<li>CALB &#8211; 10.3 GWh (3.6%)<\/li>\n<li>Gotion High-Tech Co. (Guoxuan) &#8211; 6.8 GWh (2.4%)<\/li>\n<li>Envision AESC &#8211; 3.5 GWh (1.2%)<\/li>\n<li>Farasis Energy &#8211; 2.1 GWh (0.7%)<\/li>\n<li>other &#8211; 16.8 GWh (5.9%)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total 286.2 GWh<\/strong> (only passenger xEVs)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/global-passenger-xev-bevs-phevs-hevs-battery-2021-source-adamas-intelligence.png\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"16\" height=\"9\"\/><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>A very interesting bit of information in the Adamas Intelligence&#8217;s report is the share of batteries that the largest manufacturers sent to <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\">Tesla<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla alone was responsible for 23% of the total passenger xEV battery capacity deployed onto roads globally (down from 26% in 2020), which means about 65.8 GWh.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CATL: 21%<\/strong> of batteries went into Tesla cars. We assume that&#8217;s mostly for Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3\/Model Y with LFP battery cells, but let&#8217;s not forget that the LFP were also used in the US recently.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>&#8220;In 2021, 21% of all passenger EV battery capacity deployed onto roads by CATL went into MIC Tesla Model 3s and Model Ys, making Tesla the cell supplier\u2019s widest channel to market for the calendar year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>LG Energy Solution: 19%<\/strong> of batteries went into Tesla cars.<br \/>NCM (maybe also NCMA) 2170-type cells, mostly for Made-in-China (MIC) Model 3\/Model Y.
