As a refresher, Harley-Davidson first launched its LiveWire electric motorcycle in 2019<\/a>. <\/p>\n Around the same time, H-D purchased the StaCyc brand of kids\u2019 electric balance bikes<\/a>, bringing them under the H-D nameplate.<\/p>\n The Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle was also sold under the H-D label through 2021, when Harley decided to spin off a new sub-brand named LiveWire<\/a> to encompass all of its electrically powered products from kids\u2019 electric balance bikes to full-size electric motorcycles.<\/p>\n The company\u2019s latest financial reports now show us how much of Harley\u2019s revenue came from the different electric models.<\/p>\n As it turns out, those kids\u2019 electric balance bikes are big money. Out of a total electric-based revenue of $73.9 million from all of 2019, 2020, and the first nine months of 2021, H-D made $41.3 million from selling StaCyc electric balance bikes.<\/p>\n A total of $29.9 million was attributed to selling electric motorcycles, though that number doesn\u2019t quite tell the whole story. The electric motorcycle revenue also includes $15.3 million in concessions that H-D made to its dealers for investing in EV equipment, likely including the broad network of DC fast chargers now spread across H-D dealerships. Including that $15.3 million shows an actual revenue of $45.2 million in Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycle sales.<\/p>\n The reports also give us a better look at how many LiveWires were actually sold during that 33-month period. H-D reported wholesale shipments of 1,942 units and retail sales of 1,648 units. <\/p>\n Sales figures from other electric motorcycle companies are hard to come by. Zero Motorcycles<\/a>, which is a private company and thus does not release financial reports publicly like Harley-Davidson does, is estimated to sell several thousand motorcycles a year across nearly a dozen different models. Harley-Davidson has referred to the LiveWire as the \u201c#1 best-selling electric motorcycle in the US,<\/a>\u201d likely indicating that they estimate it to sell better than any single model in Zero\u2019s lineup.<\/p>\n Harley-Davidson announced late last year that it intends to take its LiveWire sub-brand public via a SPAC<\/a> that is expected to be completed by the end of Q2 this year.<\/p>\n Just this week we learned that LiveWire will be unveiling its next electric motorcycle model<\/a> by the same time.<\/p>\n I can\u2019t say I\u2019m not surprised here. Who would have thought that a kid\u2019s balance e-bike would outsell Harley\u2019s 100+ hp flagship electric motorcycle?<\/p>\n But I can see how it makes sense. A kid\u2019s e-bike is a much easier purchase to swing. And let\u2019s face it, parents buy their kids everything, especially if it means they can herd junior into their own favorite pastime. <\/p>\n Then consider that these things aren\u2019t cheap. StaCyc bikes start at $800 and go into the four figures. So there\u2019s serious revenue to be had there. <\/p>\n And finally, throw on top of all of that the fact that electric bike sales positively skyrocketed once the pandemic started<\/a>, meaning shelves were always empty and many e-bikes became unobtainium for the better part of the last two years.<\/p>\n I know it sounds sensational to say \u201cHarley sold more kids\u2019 e-bikes than real e-motorcycles\u201d, and there will be plenty of jabs at the company for it. But that\u2019s kind of missing the point. It\u2019s not that H-D\u2019s electric motorcycles don\u2019t have a future. It\u2019s that they made a smart move buying StaCyc a few years ago (for reportedly around $6 million) and then cashing in huge on those sales. At the same time, LiveWire is continuing to sell its full-size LiveWire One electric motorcycle (for which we don\u2019t have sales figures yet reflecting the bikes\u2019 performance under its new sub-brand label). LiveWire is also preparing to roll out a more affordable middle-weight electric motorcycle soon<\/a> that could prove to be very popular with a larger range of riders without the deep pockets required for the original H-D LiveWire.<\/p>\n So I\u2019d say the future is looking quite bright for H-D\u2019s LiveWire brand, both on its kids\u2019 bikes and for its full-size electric motorcycles.<\/p>\n![\"Harley](\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2019\/03\/StaCyc_Harley3-e1570788322734.jpg?quality=82&strip=all&w=1000\" "\\"Over")
