{"id":15180,"date":"2022-02-11T09:05:23","date_gmt":"2022-02-11T14:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=15180"},"modified":"2022-02-11T09:05:23","modified_gmt":"2022-02-11T14:05:23","slug":"ford-poaches-alan-clarke-tesla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=15180","title":{"rendered":"Ford Signs Top Tesla Engineer Alan Clarke To Boost EV Development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ford Motor Company has poached former Tesla engineering director Alan Clarke as the Detroit carmaker looks to challenge North America&#8217;s EV leader in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Clarke, a 12-year <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%7D\">Tesla<\/a> veteran, joined Ford in January to work with the Advanced EV Development department in California, according to his <em>LinkedIn<\/em> page. He made the move public on the professional network earlier this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before joining Ford, Clarke worked as director of new programs engineering for Tesla between October 2017 and January 2022, senior manager of new programs engineering (January 2012\u2013October 2017), and senior design engineer (September 2009\u2013January 2012).<\/p>\n<p>The 35-year-old engineer played a key role in developing the Tesla Model S, overseeing the design of the car&#8217;s battery enclosure, suspension, steering and exterior door handle mechanisms. He also contributed to the development of the Tesla Model X drivetrain.<\/p>\n<p>In his role as senior manager of new programs engineering, he led important programs for Tesla, including vehicle architecture for Model 3 and Model Y, chief engineering for the Tesla Roadster prototype, and engineering work on the Cybertruck prototype.<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-item\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"embed\" data-embed-code=\"%3Ciframe%20src%3D%22https%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fembed%2Ffeed%2Fupdate%2Furn%3Ali%3Ashare%3A6896301849029304320%22%20height%3D%22463%22%20width%3D%22504%22%20frameborder%3D%220%22%20allowfullscreen%3D%22%22%20title%3D%22Embedded%20post%22%3E%3C%2Fiframe%3E\">\u00a0<\/section>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I\u2019m happy to share that I&#8217;m starting a new position in Advanced EV Development at Ford Motor Company,<\/em>&#8221; Clarke wrote on his public\u00a0<em>LinkedIn<\/em> profile page. More than 700 people responded to the news, including <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/563836\/ford-farley-rivian-lightning-charging\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22563836%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22ford-farley-rivian-lightning-charging%22%7D\">Ford CEO Jim Farley<\/a> who posted, &#8220;<em>Welcome, Alan! Great to have you on the team.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Ford signing Clarke follows the hiring of another former Tesla top engineer, Doug Field, who also headed Apple&#8217;s car program. At Ford&#8217;s Advanced EV Development division, Clarke will report to Field, a Ford spokesperson told\u00a0<em>Automotive News<\/em>.\u00a0Field is <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/ford\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22ford%22%7D\">Ford<\/a>&#8216;s chief advanced technology and embedded systems officer.<\/p>\n<p>The high-profile hiring speaks volumes about Ford\u2019s goal of competing with Tesla and other companies in EV and technology.
