Tesla is planning to build its new design center in Beijing later this year, according to a new document released by the Chinese government.<\/p>\n
\n\t\t<\/p>\n Shortly after announcing Gigafactory Shanghai, Tesla made it clear that it not only wants to tap into China\u2019s incredible capacity in manufacturing, but it also wants to take advantage of the country\u2019s incredible engineering and design talent.<\/p>\n In early 2020,\u00a0Tesla announced plans to establish a new R&D center and a new design center in China to build \u201ca Chinese-style\u201d electric car<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tesla started\u00a0taking design submissions for its Chinese-made small electric car<\/a>\u00a0that summer and started\u00a0hiring for the program<\/a>\u00a0shortly after.<\/p>\n Late last year, the automaker announced that it opened its new R&D center in Shanghai<\/a> next to the factory.<\/p>\n It was expected that the design studio might also land in Shanghai, but now it appears that Tesla selected Beijing.<\/p>\n According to Reuters, the government of China\u2019s sprawling capital released a new report listing new projects coming to the city in 2022, and it included Tesla\u2019s new design center. <\/p>\n The first project for Tesla\u2019s new design studio is expected to be the \u201c$25,000\u201d electric car, but CEO Elon Musk recently said that Tesla is currently not working on the new model<\/a>.<\/p>\n Tesla\u2019s Beijing Design Center would become Tesla\u2019s second design center after the one in Los Angeles, which houses most of the company\u2019s designers and some engineering teams.<\/p>\n In 2020, Musk also announced plans for the automaker to\u00a0open a European design center in Germany<\/a>.<\/p>\n There\u2019s been a rumored location in the heart of Berlin, but nothing else has come out about this project in almost two years.<\/p>\n
