Right now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jeep.com\/cherokee.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">your Jeep dealer can sell you<\/a> a compact crossover <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/jeep\/cherokee\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Cherokee<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2021-Jeep-Cherokee\/expert-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">based on a Fiat platform and built by Stellantis<\/a>, and the most iconic Cherokee remains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2009\/04\/14\/future-classic-jeep-xj-cherokee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">the 1984-2001 XJ<\/a>, which was designed by American Motors with a great deal of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/renault\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Renault<\/a> input and (starting in 1987) built by <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chrysler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Chrysler<\/a> and then (starting in 1998) DaimlerChrysler. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeep_Cherokee_(SJ)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">The first Cherokees<\/a> were great big two-doors based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2013\/11\/junkyard-find-1976-jeep-wagoneer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">the Wagoneer<\/a>, though, and they were built from the 1974 through 1983 model years. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is one of those early Cherokees, photographed a couple of months back in <a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoautoandparts.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">a Denver-area self-service boneyard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143828\/30-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Jeep\/1976-Jeep\/1976-Jeep-Full-Line-Brochure\/slides\/1976_Jeep_Full_Line-09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">1976 SJ Cherokee<\/a> was a 3,938-pound behemoth (actually about the same weight as the current Cherokee and its much smaller footprint, but modern vehicles are a lot heavier than their predecessors), with a base price of $5,258. That&#8217;s about $26,590 in 2022 dollars, which is remarkably similar to the $28,135 MSRP of the base &#8217;22 Cherokee, but keep in mind that you <em>really<\/em> had to pile on <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Jeep\/1976-Jeep\/1976-Jeep-Full-Line-Brochure\/slides\/1976_Jeep_Full_Line-12.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the extra-cost options<\/a> if you wanted features we take for granted today (for example, power steering, automatic transmission, and any sort of audio system cost plenty in your &#8217;76 Cherokee).<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143822\/22-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The base engine for the &#8217;76 Cherokee was the good old 258-cubic-inch AMC straight-six, rated at 110 horsepower and 195 pound-feet. If you think that sounds like a formula for an agonizingly slow <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">truck<\/a>, you&#8217;re right. That&#8217;s why most &#8217;76 Cherokee buyers opted for one of the three available <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AMC_V8_engine#Gen-3_AMC_tall-deck_(1970%E2%80%931991)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">AMC V8 engines<\/a>; you could get a 304 (5.0-liter) rated at 150 horsepower, a 360 (5.8-liter) with either 175 or 195 horsepower, or a 401 (6.5-liter) making 235 horses. All three engines look the same at a glance and I didn&#8217;t feel up to scraping off decades of engine-block grime to look at casting numbers, so we&#8217;ll just say this <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/jeep\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">Jeep<\/a> has an AMC V8 built between 1970 and 1991 and leave it at that.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143831\/33-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>AMC pitched this truck as a rough-and-rugged family hauler, laughably short on luxury by 21st-century truck standards but fairly comfortable compared to the military-style trucks many Americans had bought in earlier decades. It&#8217;s cheaper and sportier-looking than its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/jeep\/wagoneer\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">Wagoneer<\/a> sibling, thanks to the stylish two-door setup, but access to the passenger compartment was more difficult. <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Jeep\/1977-Jeep\/1977%20Jeep%20Full%20Line\/slides\/1977_Jeep_Full_Line-13.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">A four-door version<\/a> appeared starting in 1977.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143810\/04-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one lived a hard life and there&#8217;s not much interior left.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143818\/15-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Is there rust? Yes, plenty!<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143812\/06-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>No air conditioning, but at least it has an automatic transmission (the base gearbox was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34730466\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-floor-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">three-on-the-floor manual<\/a>) and rear window defogger. By the way, that automatic added 455 bucks (about $2,300 now) and the defogger cost $52 ($262 now). The A\/C would have been a cool 480 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spondulix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">spondulix<\/a>, which comes to about $2,425 in 2022). There would be riots in Jeep showrooms if Stellantis attempted to sell any Jeeps with no A\/C today, so the cost is figured into the sticker price.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143815\/09-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A tinny, single-speaker AM radio cost 75 bucks from your Jeep <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">dealer<\/a> in 1976 ($380 today), but this truck has an <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/aftermarket\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">aftermarket<\/a> AM\/FM\/cassette deck from MetroSound.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143816\/14-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Even though this yard is just south of Denver, I found a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbshop.com\/oakland-athletics\/mens-oakland-athletics-new-era-green-road-authentic-collection-on-field-59fifty-performance-fitted-hat\/t-25674455+p-0262500946896+z-9-347022225?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">fitted Oakland Athletics cap<\/a> in dusty but otherwise nice condition in the back seat of this Cherokee. I took it home, washed it, and donated it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caranddriver.com\/news\/a15373294\/24-hours-of-lemons-veteran-66-plymouth-belvedere-still-going-strong-this-is-how-you-do-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">a 24 Hours of Lemons team full of A&#8217;s fans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/02\/12143830\/32-1976-Jeep-Cherokee-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Unlike later Cherokees (and Grand Cherokees), the SJ was built with huntin&#8217; and fishin&#8217; abilities prioritized over commuting comfort, and these stickers show that this truck spent its share of time in the woods.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"_EYvf6dojwU\" style=\"background-image: url('');\"\/>\n<p>Just the thing for driving your daughters cross-country to a campsite full of hunky boys.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"cYRKmLg-JOo\" style=\"background-image: url('');\"\/>\n<p>A couple of decades later and every mall parking lot would be packed with Cherokee Chiefs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Americans have been able to buy a vehicle called the Cherokee for most of the last half-century, though the size and even manufacturer of Cherokees has varied greatly during that period.
