Vehicle deliveries grew by 87% in 2021, and the company\u2019s earnings per share and revenue both beat analyst estimates by over 6%. <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%7D\">Tesla<\/a> also claimed that it achieved \u201cthe highest quarterly operating margin among all volume OEMs&#8230;demonstrating that EVs can be more profitable than combustion engine vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"table-wrapper\">\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0196\/5170\/files\/austin-ramsey-9X3DmoEM64k-unsplash.jpg?v=1644252814\" alt=\"\"\/><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p> <em>Above: It looks like the lower-priced Tesla EV is getting sidelined for the &#8216;Optimus Subprime&#8217; robot project (Unsplash:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/9X3DmoEM64k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Austin Ramsey (Opens PDF)\">Austin Ramsey<\/a>)<\/em><\/div>\n<p>Another unsurprising but welcome tidbit: Tesla confirmed that <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/model-y\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"1\" data-params=\"%7B%22make_alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22model-y%22%7D\">Model Y<\/a> production has begun at Gigafactory Texas. It\u2019s reportedly only waiting for final certification to start deliveries.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, TSLA stock tanked immediately following the earnings report\u2014over 10% in a day\u2014but soon recovered the loss. However, the announcement that the launch of Tesla\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chargedevs.com\/?s=Cybertruck\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Cybertruck (Opens PDF)\">Cybertruck<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/chargedevs.com\/?s=tesla+Semi+\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Semi (Opens PDF)\">Semi<\/a>\u00a0will be delayed until \u201chopefully next year\u201d still seems to be a drag on TSLA\u2019s prospects, at least in the near term.<\/p>\n<p>Another topic that concerns some Tesla supporters is a sense that the company is straying from its mission of electrifying transport. At a time when the company should be calling all hands on deck to bring its new vehicles to market, the mercurial <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/category\/elon-musk\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"8\" data-params=\"%7B%22section_route%22%3A%22news%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22elon-musk%22%7D\">Mr. Musk<\/a> spent much of his time on the earnings call discussing other projects. Explaining why Tesla isn\u2019t working on a new, lower-priced model, he conceded, \u201cWe have enough on our plate right now, too much on our plates, frankly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>An overloaded plate is a common problem in our spoiled society, but an overeager visitor to an all-you-can-eat buffet can always remove the lime Jell-O and sheet cake from their tray in order to make room for meat and potatoes.<\/p>\n<p>Tesla seems to have plenty of room on its plate for robotaxis. \u201cThe thing that overwhelmingly matters is when is the car autonomous,\u201d said Musk, adding that \u201cmy personal guess is that we\u2019ll achieve Full Self-Driving this year.\u201d A certain Tesla-bashing web site\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jalopnik.com\/elon-musk-promises-full-self-driving-next-year-for-th-1848432496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"claimed (Opens PDF)\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that this is the ninth year in a row that Musk has made that prediction.<\/p>\n<section contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"video\" data-url-params=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sizer\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAJCAYAAAA7KqwyAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAABpJREFUeNpi\/P\/\/PwMlgImBQjBqwLAwACDAAOVfAw9\/ZDvcAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0IFygJkcmBY\" data-src-param=\"\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><em>Above: Elon Musk expands on his vision for Tesla&#8217;s humanoid robot and how it can be used in the future (YouTube:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/0IFygJkcmBY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Lex Clips (Opens PDF)\">Lex Clips<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Also occupying a prominent place on the piled-high plate is the humanoid robot now dubbed (with an unintentional second level of irony) Optimus Subprime. \u201cIn terms of priority of products, I think actually the most important product development we\u2019re doing this year is the Optimus humanoid robot,\u201d said the man who, in his younger days, donned his armor and set out to slay the dragon of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>As for the practical purpose of this robot, Musk served up only this word salad: \u201cThe foundation of the economy is labor. Capital equipment is distilled labor. So what happens if you don\u2019t actually have a labor shortage? I\u2019m not sure what an economy even means at that point. That\u2019s what Optimus is about, so, very important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most of the EV press devoted little ink to the robot, preferring to focus on the positives in the report. However,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/01\/27\/elon-musk-tesla-prioritizing-product-development-optimus-humanoid-robot-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Electrek (Opens PDF)\">Electrek<\/a>\u00a0called the announcement \u201cquite a surprising change of strategy.\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/27\/tesla-delays-cybertruck-2023-no-budget-model-supply-chain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"Autoblog (Opens PDF)\">Autoblog<\/a>\u00a0was skeptical of Musk\u2019s claim that the robot \u201chas the potential to be more significant than the vehicle business,\u201d calling it (with understatement) \u201ca tall order, at least from an earnings perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As intended, the Lost In Space reject got a lot of headlines in the mainstream media, though not much respect.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/01\/27\/musk-tesla-robot-top-priority-for-new-product-development-this-year.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow sponsored\" aria-label=\"CNBC (Opens PDF)\">CNBC<\/a>\u00a0called the robot project \u201can example of Musk\u2019s showmanship,\u201d and lamented that \u201cit\u2019s more important for Tesla to make a robot than new car models this year,\u201d but injected a hopeful note, speculating that the robot \u201ccould be years away and may never come to fruition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Actually, given Tesla\u2019s robust demand and constrained supply, it\u2019s probably not a bad idea for the company to defer introducing new models at this time.
