{"id":15962,"date":"2022-02-22T00:02:18","date_gmt":"2022-02-22T05:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=15962"},"modified":"2022-02-22T00:02:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-22T05:02:18","slug":"ford-volvo-battery-recycling-ca","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=15962","title":{"rendered":"Ford, Volvo join Redwood in EV battery recycling push in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/ford\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Ford<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Volvo<\/a> will join <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/battery+recycling\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">battery recycling<\/a> startup Redwood Materials in developing processes, starting in California, to collect end-of-life <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\" rel=\"noopener\">batteries<\/a> from electric and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/hybrid\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">hybrid vehicles<\/a> and recover the materials for use in new batteries, the companies said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Redwood Materials, co-founded by former <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Tesla<\/a> executive JB Straubel, formed an earlier partnership last fall with Ford to develop a \u201cclosed loop\u201d or circular supply chain for <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">electric vehicle<\/a> (EV) batteries, from raw materials to recycling.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Redwood Materials said it would work directly with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-dealers\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">dealers<\/a> and dismantlers in California to identify and recover end-of-life battery packs. The materials in those packs will be recovered and recycled at Redwood Materials facilities in northern Nevada.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. automakers Ford and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">General Motors Co<\/a> (<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">GM<\/a>) have said the battery recycling effort is crucial in efforts to develop a domestic supply chain to meet increasing EV demand.<\/p>\n<p>GM and battery partner LG Energy Solution last year announced a partnership with startup Li-Cycle to recycle battery scrap material from Ultium Cells, the GM-LG joint venture that is building battery plants in Ohio, Tennessee and Michigan.<\/p>\n<p>Redwood Materials has similar partnerships with battery makers Panasonic in Nevada and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buick\/envision\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Envision<\/a> AESC in Tennessee, as well as with Amazon.
