{"id":17080,"date":"2022-03-07T17:55:58","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T22:55:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=17080"},"modified":"2022-03-07T17:55:58","modified_gmt":"2022-03-07T22:55:58","slug":"electric-medium-and-heavy-duty-trucks-will-be-cheaper-than-diesel-trucks-by-2035","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=17080","title":{"rendered":"Electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks will be cheaper than diesel trucks by 2035"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US Department of Energy today released a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/docs\/fy22osti\/82081.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>\u00a0showing that by 2035, electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks will cost the same as or less than diesel trucks.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-228510\"\/><ins class=\"adsbygoogle author_ad\" data-ad-host=\"ca-host-pub-5506057612223327\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-9817249230503449\" data-ad-format=\"auto\"\/>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<p>And by 2030, nearly half of electric medium- and heavy-duty trucks will be cheaper to buy, operate, and maintain than diesel trucks. <\/p>\n<p>Battery electric trucks are expected to become cost competitive for smaller trucks before 2030, while heavy trucks with less than 500 miles of range are projected to be cost competitive by 2035.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen\u00a0fuel cell electric vehicles are expected to become cost competitive for long-haul, heavy-duty trucks with greater than 500 miles of range by 2035.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study, which was published by the DOE\u2019s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrel.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NREL<\/a>), finds that\u00a0continued improvements to zero emission vehicle and fuel technologies will enable\u00a0clean trucks to become cheaper and more readily available over the next decade.<\/p>\n<p>Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/vehicles\/fact-951-november-14-2016-medium-and-heavy-trucks-account-about-quarter-highway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">account<\/a>\u00a0for less than 5% of the vehicles on the road but produce more than 20% of emissions from the transportation sector, which currently accounts for more than one-third of US greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p>US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>The Biden Administration\u2019s comprehensive approach is working to make clean transportation a reality \u2014 by reducing exposure to volatile fuel prices, investing in American manufacturing, and creating a national charging network to support more electric vehicles on the road.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is investing more than $7 billion into the supply chain for batteries over the next five years.
