As excited as we all are about BMW M\u2019s upcoming performance models, the future of the brand \u2014 and where it\u2019s main focus is \u2014 is electrification. BMW\u2019s upcoming electric models will be its most important models, as it slowly transitions into a mostly electric automaker. Recently, BMW CTO Frank Weber briefed the press on the future of electrification, as well as the BMW i7.<\/p>\n

The next important EV for BMW is the i7<\/a>. Not only will the i7 be based on the next-gen 7 Series \u2014 which is the brand\u2019s most expensive luxury car \u2014 but the i7 will be BMW\u2019s technological flagship. The BMW i7 will combine all of the luxury features that make the 7 Series BMW\u2019s flagship luxury car with its most advanced battery and electric motor tech.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 7 Series is not just a product for us. The 7 Series is a collection of our capabilities. It is what we are really able to do. The i7 is not only the most powerful electric vehicle we will do, it has a cinema experience in the second row, the doors will open automatically and close automatically \u2014 and it has a long, long list of things. It has art mode, so it has real digital art inside,\u201d said Weber.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, the upcoming BMW i7 will get a slightly different battery package than the BMW iX<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cFundamentally,<\/span> the<\/span> 7 Series uses<\/span> the<\/span> same<\/span> electric<\/span> machine<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> rear<\/span> and<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> front,<\/span> using<\/span> the<\/span> same<\/span> inverter<\/span> technology<\/span> so<\/span> here<\/span> they<\/span> are<\/span> identical.<\/span> The<\/span> i7 however,<\/span> has<\/span> a<\/span> unique<\/span> battery<\/span> package.\u201d he said. According to Weber, the i7\u2019s electric powertrain and battery pack are about 80-percent similar to those found in the iX.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s even more exciting is that there will be a very special, more powerful version of the BMW i7 coming later on. According to Weber, the twelve-cylinder engine was such a big part of the 7 Series\u2019 history that, for the i7, BMW needed an electric equivalent.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat<\/span> we<\/span> thought<\/span> is,<\/span> after<\/span> the<\/span> twelve-cylinder<\/span> died<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> in<\/span> the<\/span> 7 Series,\u00a0we<\/span> believe<\/span> that<\/span> it<\/span> deserves<\/span>\u00a0an<\/span> adequate<\/span> replacement<\/span> that<\/span> is<\/span> all<\/span> electric.<\/span> So<\/span> you<\/span> will<\/span> see<\/span> a<\/span> special<\/span> version<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> 7 Series<\/span>\u00a0which<\/span> is<\/span> actually<\/span> also<\/span> the<\/span> most<\/span> powerful<\/span> version<\/span> of<\/span> the 7 Series,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re hoping for drastically different looks between the 7 Series and i7, though, you\u2019re going to be disappointed. BMW wanted to keep both cars similar looking, so that 7 Series customers really just choose whichever powertrain they want.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe<\/span> want<\/span> to<\/span> do<\/span> the<\/span> best<\/span> electric<\/span> vehicles<\/span> and<\/span> we<\/span> want<\/span> to<\/span> be<\/span> the<\/span> best<\/span> combustion<\/span> engine<\/span> vehicles<\/span> and, <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> a<\/span> 7 Aeries,<\/span> people<\/span> make<\/span> their<\/span> choices,\u201d Weber said.<\/span> \u201c[There are]\u00a0no<\/span> visual<\/span> differences, it\u2019s a 7 [Series], pick whatever you prefer.\u00a0<\/span>The BMW 7 Series and i7 will be making their official debuts next month, which will kick off the brand\u2019s future of luxury technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
