{"id":18575,"date":"2022-03-27T09:04:13","date_gmt":"2022-03-27T13:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=18575"},"modified":"2022-03-27T09:04:13","modified_gmt":"2022-03-27T13:04:13","slug":"toyota-aurora-autonomous-ride-hailing-dallas-fort-worth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=18575","title":{"rendered":"Toyota, Aurora test-drive autonomous ride-hailing in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Japan&#8217;s<\/a> Toyota Motor and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/oldsmobile\/aurora\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Aurora<\/a> Innovation Inc, a U.S. developer of automated driving systems, have started testing autonomous ride-hailing fleet in Texas, with two safety operators and no passenger on board, Aurora said.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/toyota\/sienna\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Toyota&#8217;s Sienna<\/a> minivans, retrofitted with Aurora&#8217;s self-driving system, will be tested on highways and suburban streets in the Dallas-Fort-Worth area, with the operation including trips en route to an airport.<\/p>\n<p>Autonomous vehicle startups are under pressure to generate meaningful revenue from billions of dollars of engineering investment, but scaling up the fleet is a challenge as technological hurdles remain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The route showcases Aurora&#8217;s ability to safely operate at highway speeds, a key technical differentiator that allows it to prioritize popular and lucrative rides,&#8221; the U.S. company said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora&#8217;s rival <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/waymo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Waymo<\/a> charges passengers of its driverless <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/minivan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">minivans<\/a> for rides in limited suburban areas in Phoenix, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/alphabet-waymo-idCNL1N2R80CD\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">and airport pickups are not available<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Waymo said on Monday it is ready to deploy <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/driverless+car\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">driverless vehicles<\/a> in the densely populated San Francisco city, without giving a timeframe for the launch.<\/p>\n<p>Aurora, led by Chris Urmson, a former head of Google&#8217;s <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/autonomous\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">self-driving car<\/a> project that has since become Waymo, said it plans to continue adding vehicles to the fleet in preparation for commercial launch on ride-hailing networks such as <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/uber\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Uber<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-uber-atg-idUKKBN28H2RX\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Aurora bought Uber&#8217;s autonomous vehicle unit ATG<\/a> in 2020 while the ride-hailing giant had acquired a 26% ownership interest in Aurora.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SAN FRANCISCO \u2014 Japan&#8217;s Toyota Motor and Aurora Innovation Inc, a U.S. developer of automated driving systems, have started testing autonomous ride-hailing fleet in Texas, with two safety operators and no passenger on board, Aurora said.
