{"id":18636,"date":"2022-03-28T12:04:10","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T16:04:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=18636"},"modified":"2022-03-28T12:04:10","modified_gmt":"2022-03-28T16:04:10","slug":"1135425_toyota-nissan-ev-tax-credit-phaseout-soon-affordability-window","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=18636","title":{"rendered":"Toyota and Nissan EVs: With $7,500 tax credit phaseout soon, don\u2019t miss the affordability window"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The runway is looking shorter for two new affordable electric vehicles from Toyota and Nissan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>That\u2019s because both brands are getting quite close to a sales barrier that will no longer allow buyers to claim the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit\u2014which could make quite a difference for those considering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134196_2023-toyota-bz4x-ev-electric-suv-photos-specs-range-review-info\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Toyota bZ4X<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135407_2023-nissan-ariya-electric-test-drive-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nissan Ariya<\/a>, respectively.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The credit, called 30D by the IRS, has made a life-changing difference for many families\u2014helping them afford a fully electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid sooner than they otherwise might have. As the biggest consumer incentive put forward by the federal government to help foster the acceptance of EVs, it\u2019s broadly supported\u2014and It\u2019s helped automakers absorb some of the cost of expensive battery packs, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Although there\u2019s still a chance that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133669_ev-tax-credit-boost-how-the-versions-compare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a revamped and renewed EV tax credit<\/a>\u2014offering up to $12,500 per vehicle\u2014might be adopted, we\u2019re left with the existing tax credit for the foreseeable future. And under its rules, when automakers sell 200,000 qualifying plug-in hybrids and\/or EVs, they trigger a 12-month phaseout period starting the following quarter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100813862_m\" title=\"2019 Tesla Model 3\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2019 Tesla Model 3\" width=\"640\" height=\"359\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"575\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2019-tesla-model-3_100813862_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2019-tesla-model-3_100813862_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2019-tesla-model-3_100813862_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2019-tesla-model-3_100813862_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2019-tesla-model-3_100813862_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2019-tesla-model-3_100813862_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2019 Tesla Model 3<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Tesla already reached its 200,000-vehicle ceiling in Q3 2018, bringing a complete phaseout of the credit after December 2019. GM was one quarter behind, with a full phaseout at the end of March 2020.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>It\u2019s worth noting that the EV tax credit doesn\u2019t go away when those carmakers hit the threshold. The next quarter, the tax credit is half the amount ($3,750 for EVs), and then two quarters later it drops to one-fourth of the full amount ($1,875 for EVs) for two full calendar quarters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Since the EV tax credit phaseout, Tesla has shifted its prices mostly upward, while GM made an effort to keep its lowest-priced EV affordable. Along with a product refresh, it repositioned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1131283_2022-chevy-bolt-ev-price-cut-affordability-ev-tax-credit-or-not\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV<\/a>, giving it about a $5,500 price cut. However Nissan applied nearly the same price drop to its Leaf\u2014making it the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1131283_2022-chevy-bolt-ev-price-cut-affordability-ev-tax-credit-or-not\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cheapest electric car in the U.S. market<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100781581_m\" title=\"2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"678\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chevrolet-bolt_100781581_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/chevrolet-bolt_100781581_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chevrolet-bolt_100781581_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chevrolet-bolt_100781581_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/chevrolet-bolt_100781581_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/chevrolet-bolt_100781581_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">According to Loren McDonald at <a href=\"https:\/\/evadoption.com\/ev-sales\/federal-ev-tax-credit-phase-out-tracker-by-automaker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EVAdoption<\/a>, three other automakers are currently over 150,000 cumulative sales toward the phaseout: Toyota, Nissan, and Ford.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Toyota is closest, at about 190,000 qualifying vehicles through 2021 by McDonald\u2019s last estimate (not yet reflected at that link).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Officially, Toyota Motor North America says that it will not likely reach the 200,000-unit ceiling until \u201cthe latter half of 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Toyota was not willing to release an exact tally, and it cautions that its own time estimate is speculation, depending on various market factors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100750419_m\" title=\"2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime XSE\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime XSE\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"682\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2021-toyota-rav4_100750419_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/2021-toyota-rav4_100750419_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2021-toyota-rav4_100750419_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/2021-toyota-rav4_100750419_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/2021-toyota-rav4_100750419_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/2021-toyota-rav4_100750419_s.jpg\" class=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime XSE<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Some of those\u2014like persistent chip- and component-related supply issues\u2014would include how it can keep up the pace on deliveries of plug-in hybrid Prime models. Toyota sources have also hinted that it might soon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134319_future-toyota-prime-plug-in-hybrids-range-and-performance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expand its family of Prime plug-in hybrids<\/a>\u2014with a Highlander Prime, for instance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The 200,000-vehicle sunset for the credit might be approaching faster than Nissan had anticipated months ago. It noted last week that the Leaf had its best February sales in eight years, with a 300% boost in Leaf interest, based on web traffic for its consumer site.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The Leaf had reached a cumulative 165,000 sales as of the end of 2021. Considering the spike in Leaf sales, the total likely has passed 170,000 and could be approaching 175,000. The bZ4X is expected to start well under $40,000, while Nissan has said that a base version of the Ariya will start around $40,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Given Ford\u2019s anticipated higher production numbers for both its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134426_ford-plans-to-triple-production-of-mustang-mach-e-by-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mustang Mach-E<\/a> and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134628_ford-f-150-lightning-ev-production-boosted-to-150-000-annually-orders-start-this-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">F-150 Lightning<\/a>, it might also hit the 200,000-vehicle threshold within the next year\u2014depending on how quickly it ramps those models up and whether there are other supply issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>This all could change if Congress decides to re-up the tax credit.
