{"id":18779,"date":"2022-03-30T09:03:53","date_gmt":"2022-03-30T13:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=18779"},"modified":"2022-03-30T09:03:53","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T13:03:53","slug":"1135451_usps-ups-its-order-of-electric-mail-trucks-amid-continued-controversy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=18779","title":{"rendered":"USPS ups its order of electric mail trucks, amid continued controversy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States Postal Service (USPS) is increasing orders for electric mail trucks, amid continued criticism of conservative electrification targets for the fleet.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">It&#8217;s the latest development on a yearlong drama, after the postal service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1131375_fresh-usps-mail-trucks-revealed-not-all-will-be-electric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced a long-term agreement<\/a> with defense contractor Oshkosh Defense that planned on just 10% of trucks being all-electric.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the USPS announced that it was placing a $2.98 billion order for 50,000 of the new vehicles, with a minimum of 10,019 to be battery-electric. In a press release, the USPS said it upped the number of EVs because of its improving financial outlook and a review of its operating strategy, adding that officials have identified routes &#8220;that present the best initial application for electric vehicles.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The number of EVs could be further increased &#8220;should additional funding become available from internal or other sources, and if the use case for BEVs continues to improve,&#8221; the USPS said.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Going back to 2017, when it re-upped its call for next-generation vehicles to replace its aged fleet, the USPS had been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1113964_u-s-postal-service-urged-to-choose-electric-delivery-trucks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged to choose electric trucks<\/a>. Earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134970_white-house-epa-ask-usps-to-reconsider-sidelining-evs-for-next-generation-mail-truck-contract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the White House<\/a> asked the postal service to reconsider its plans. White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Brenda Mallory called the USPS environmental review program that led to the sidelining of EVs &#8220;flawed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">The Biden administration aims to make all new light-duty vehicle purchases for the federal fleet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134407_biden-targets-all-light-federal-fleet-vehicles-to-be-electric-by-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">electric by 2027<\/a>, and to make all federal vehicle acquisitions electric by 2035. In addition to reducing emissions, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133513_report-shifting-the-federal-fleet-to-evs-could-save-us-taxpayers-4-6-billion-by-2030\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could save taxpayers $4.6 billion by 2030<\/a>, according to a 2021 report.
