{"id":20919,"date":"2022-04-27T12:03:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-27T16:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=20919"},"modified":"2022-04-27T12:03:56","modified_gmt":"2022-04-27T16:03:56","slug":"1135680_will-solid-state-batteries-be-the-key-to-make-electric-suvs-and-pickups-viable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=20919","title":{"rendered":"Will solid-state batteries be the key to make electric SUVs and pickups viable?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Earlier this month Nissan announced the establishment of a prototype production facility for all-solid-state battery cells\u2014with plans to establish a pilot production line as soon as 2024 in Japan, and market availability in an EV in 2028.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The cells are potentially \u201ca game changer for EV democratization,\u201d according to Nissan, with the potential to double energy density by weight, while offering one-third the fast-charge time\u2014in a cell for which the company is targeting a cost of just $75 per kwh. They\u2019re a key part of the company\u2019s Nissan Ambition 2030 plan, which calls for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134294_nissan-aims-for-15-evs-by-2030-solid-state-batteries-by-2028\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15 all-electric vehicles<\/a> for the Nissan and Infiniti brands by the end of the decade\u2014and the aim of EVs making up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133155_nissan-targets-40-battery-electric-models-for-us-by-2030-more-than-biden-pact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40% of its U.S. sales<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The project, in some respects, echoes efforts Nissan made toward the Leaf, when it jointly developed automotive-grade lithium-ion cells for the pioneering EV more than a decade ago, when suppliers weren\u2019t providing quite what it needed\u2014and now it\u2019s hoping to do something similar with solid-state battery technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>In a Q&amp;A session with the press at the time of the announcement, Kazuhiro Doi, Nissan\u2019s corporate VP leading the Nissan Research Center, noted that solid-state cells may play an important role in both democratizing EVs and making larger electric trucks viable\u2014a very different application in mind than Toyota\u2019s plan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134692_toyota-solid-state-battery-hybrid-by-2025-prius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to debut the tech in a hybrid by 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\" readability=\"7\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100802114_m\" title=\"Ultium EV platform - GMC Hummer EV\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Ultium EV platform - GMC Hummer EV\" width=\"640\" height=\"358\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"572\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/ultium-ev-platform--gmc-hummer-ev_100802114_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/ultium-ev-platform--gmc-hummer-ev_100802114_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/ultium-ev-platform--gmc-hummer-ev_100802114_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/ultium-ev-platform--gmc-hummer-ev_100802114_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/ultium-ev-platform--gmc-hummer-ev_100802114_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/ultium-ev-platform--gmc-hummer-ev_100802114_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Ultium EV platform &#8211; GMC Hummer EV<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The truck dilemma is a familiar issue we\u2019ve discussed with other vehicles and automakers\u2014with Land Rover considering fuel cells because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1128746_jaguar-land-rover-fuel-cell-batteries-in-big-suvs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201cdiminishing returns\u201d of battery packs in big SUVs<\/a>, and Hyundai suggesting that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1130499_hyundai-exec-fuel-cell-tech-might-be-smarter-than-big-batteries-in-electric-pickups-and-suvs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">it might be smarter to use hydrogen fuel-cell tech<\/a> than two layers of batteries. The larger and heavier the truck, the heavier the battery pack ends up being\u2014and then the truck\u2019s structure needs to be stouter to support the added weight of the battery while preserving the expected payload for such a model. For an example, look no further than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135339_2022-gmc-hummer-ev-tread-lightly-agent-of-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GMC Hummer EV<\/a>, which weighs more than 9,000 pounds in order to pack enough batteries\u2014roughly a third of its curb weight, at more than 200 kwh\u2014to achieve more than 300 miles of range.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Still training wheels<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The prototype facility is building each battery prototype by hand, and it reflects a deep level of commitment already. With them, Nissan is also designing a new generation of motors and inverters to complement the solid-state cells, and with its prototype cells the automaker plans to perform crash tests, study battery protection, and conduct durability testing. That includes in-house nail-piercing tests, and X-ray imaging.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>At present, the cells are very small\u201420-mAh cells that are single-layer and just 2 cm across. This year Nissan will also conduct a feasibility study at laboratory scale and will enlarge the cells to a design in the 3-5 Ah range that\u2019s multi-layer and a 10-cm width. Doi noted that in more than 11 years on the market, the Nissan Leaf has had \u201czero market incident\u201d regarding fires or thermal runaway, emphasizing that safety is a top priority in the new cells, too.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Part of a U.S. collaboration with NASA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The Nissan cells benefit from a collaboration with NASA and UC San Diego, in which an interlayer was developed with help from AI techniques\u2014and a database of 131,000 materials\u2014to prevent the growth of lithium dendrites that could otherwise potentially pierce through, short-circuiting the cells. Doi described the strategy as \u201cbeyond expectation,\u201d and in final validation now with the actual material.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The solid-state cells use a high-ion-conductive organic electrolyte chosen for its interface stability with the anode and its high-power potential, with a meshlike binding and precise mixing process between activa material and solid electrolyte leading to a reduction in cell resistence. Charge times at the 25 degrees C more likely as an ambient temp permit fast-charging to 90% in 30 minutes. Cooling needs are reduced, too, however.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Potential for lower carbon footprint, too<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Additionally, the solid-state cells are far more mass-efficient than lithium-ion cells, so they have the potential to have a lower CO2 impact based on the materials reduction. Doi noted that current liquid lithium-ion batteries have a dry process, and if it can apply a dry process to this, it could help reduce CO2.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Overall, the goal is simply to make a great electric vehicle, Nissan executives underscored\u2014with easier charging, less weight, and affordability for mass-market vehicles, not just niche vehicles.
