{"id":21346,"date":"2022-05-03T12:03:56","date_gmt":"2022-05-03T16:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=21346"},"modified":"2022-05-03T12:03:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-03T16:03:56","slug":"1135745_stellantis-is-investing-in-canada-for-ev-manufacturing-and-battery-braintrust","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=21346","title":{"rendered":"Stellantis is investing in Canada for EV manufacturing\u2014and battery braintrust"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The automaker Stellantis, the parent of Jeep, Chrysler, and Ram, among many others, announced Monday that it plans to spend about $2.8 billion on a manufacturing overhaul of its Canadian plants, preparing for flexible architectures for EVs and electrified vehicles in general\u2014including a \u201cmulti-energy\u201d strategy.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The new investment is part of an initiative announced last summer to spend about $35 billion over five years, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1132846_dodge-and-jeep-parent-is-targeting-500-mile-range-2-0-second-0-60-mph-for-future-evs\">four platforms to provide electrified architectures<\/a> it can scale across its 14 brands and anything from minicars to big trucks and vans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100822807_m\" title=\"Chrysler Airflow concept\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Chrysler Airflow concept\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chrysler-airflow-concept_100822807_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/chrysler-airflow-concept_100822807_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chrysler-airflow-concept_100822807_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/chrysler-airflow-concept_100822807_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/chrysler-airflow-concept_100822807_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/chrysler-airflow-concept_100822807_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chrysler Airflow concept<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Starting in 2023, the Windsor, Ontario, plant that makes Chrysler minivans, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1123904_plugging-in-pacifica-hybrid-city-drive-review-of-its-32-mile-electric-range\">Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid<\/a>, will be transformed into a site that can build \u201ca new multi-energy vehicle (MEV) architecture that will provide battery-electric (BEV) capability for multiple models,\u201d according to Stellantis, with flexible production to meet market demand as it evolves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Chrysler recently suggested to <em>Green Car Reports<\/em> that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135675_chrysler-boss-we-are-rethinking-the-minivan-for-the-electric-era\">\u201crethinking\u201d the minivan<\/a> for the electric era.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The other factory to be revamped is in Brampton, Ontario. Stellantis says that it \u201cwill be retooled and fully modernized, beginning in 2024,\u201d and that the site will be\u00a0 It now makes the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans, as well as the Dodge Challenger coupe. The brand has said that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133328_dodge-electric-concept-car-coming-in-2022-on-the-way-to-ev-muscle-car-in-2024\">Dodge electric muscle car is arriving by 2024<\/a>, with a concept previewing the model due this year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Outside of two assembly plants in Mexico, Stellantis\u2019 North American manufacturing footprint is focused in the U.S. Great Lakes region. CEO Carlos Tavares last year underscored that the added cost of manufacturing electric vehicles is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134317_stellantis-ceo-evs-cost-company-50-more-beyond-the-limits-of-what-industry-can-sustain\">\u201cbeyond the limits\u201d<\/a> for what the auto industry can sustain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The automaker also confirmed plans to open its first battery lab in North America\u2014also in Windsor, Ontario.
