{"id":21402,"date":"2022-05-04T04:14:49","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T08:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=21402"},"modified":"2022-05-04T04:14:49","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T08:14:49","slug":"why-did-lime-quietly-kill-off-its-electric-moped-sharing-program-in-nyc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=21402","title":{"rendered":"Why did Lime quietly kill off its electric moped\u2013sharing program in NYC?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019d be forgiven for not noticing, but shared micromobility company Lime\u2019s electric mopeds have disappeared from the streets of NYC less than a year after their debut.<\/p>\n<p>The electric mopeds (or \u201cseated electric scooters\u201d as my more pedantic commenters will soon inform me) were added to Lime\u2019s micromobility suite to complement its standing electric scooters and electric bicycles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/04\/05\/lime-rolls-out-affordable-rent-by-the-minute-electric-mopeds-in-its-first-us-city\/\">They were first rolled out in Washington, DC<\/a>, before joining Lime\u2019s NYC fleet, and were used as a faster alternative to the company\u2019s e-scooters and e-bikes. <\/p>\n<p>At 30 mph (48 km\/h), the electric mopeds took commuters out of the bike lanes and onto the roads, helping them reach destinations farther away in less time.<\/p>\n<p>But they didn\u2019t last long, as not even a year went by before they were pulled from NYC\u2019s streets for Lime to refocus on its smaller micromobility vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>Lime\u2019s Jacob Tugendrajch explained to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amny.com\/transit\/lime-quietly-ends-moped-sharing-program-after-less-than-a-year\/\">amNewYork Metro<\/a><\/em> that the company \u201crecently made the decision to wind down our moped program in New York City and focus entirely on the city\u2019s e-scooter pilot program.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Why did Lime quietly kill off its electric moped\u2013sharing program in NYC?\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?quality=82&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1000\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-236462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg 2000w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=150,75 150w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=300,150 300w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=768,384 768w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=1024,512 1024w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=1536,768 1536w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=350,175 350w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=1600,800 1600w, https:\/\/electrek.co\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/05\/revel-comparision-lime.jpg?resize=290,145 290w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2000px) 100vw, 2000px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>While Lime didn\u2019t specifically mention <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/02\/25\/electric-scooter-sharing-and-tesla-model-y-taxi-service-revel-raises-huge-126-million-for-expansion\/\">Revel<\/a>, the competing electric moped\u2013sharing service may have weighed into the decision.<\/p>\n<p>Revel uses the same electric mopeds as Lime, which are produced by <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/03\/29\/nius-fastest-and-most-powerful-electric-scooter-yet-arrives-in-europe-headed-to-us-soon\/\">Chinese two-wheeled EV giant NIU.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Revel began with a multi-year head start on Lime when it comes to larger electric moped sharing, beginning operations in NYC with a pilot program <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2018\/07\/31\/new-york-first-electric-moped-rental-program\/\">all the way back in 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While Lime initially brought 100 electric mopeds into NYC, Revel operates several thousand vehicles in the city.
