For nearly 40 years the company&#8217;s in-house <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/motorsports\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">motorsports<\/a> and tuning shop has churned out some of the wildest street-legal engines in the world. Currently, it&#8217;s responsible for the 600-horsepower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/04\/14\/nissan-gt-r-nismo-special-edition-debuts\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">Nissan GT-R Nismo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/12\/25\/nissan-gtr-titanium-exhaust-nismo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">heritage parts<\/a> for now-classic Skyline GT-Rs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/10\/03\/nissan-leaf-nismo-concept-brings-better-handling-and-aerodynamic\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">handling packages<\/a> on some of the company&#8217;s more mundane offerings.<\/p>\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topgear.com\/car-news\/electric\/nissan-planning-nismo-badged-performance-evs?fbclid=IwAR17AgXGSe5aIBAjucdcP1OVv4BqlY2oUyeLw8KXiFrElrHof-31XzW3a80\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Nismo will not go quietly into that EV night, according to <em>Top Gear<\/em><\/a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s not a gimmick,&#8221; Nissan&#8217;s European chairperson Guillaume Cartier told the British outlet at a recent Formula E race. &#8220;To use an English expression, it\u2019s not lipstick on a pig.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nissan plans to spend $17.7 billion introducing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/29\/nissan-ambition-2030-electric-car-plan-17-billion\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">23 electrified cars<\/a> in the next five years, with 15 of them running solely on <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\" rel=\"noopener\">battery<\/a> juice. Cartier says the Yokohama-based company is in the process of determining which of these vehicles would be best suited for the Nismo treatment. Among the concepts Nissan has shown, one called the Max-Out is an AWD, open-top, EV <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/performance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">sports car<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cartier says the goal is to &#8220;bring performance,&#8221; citing &#8220;specific suspension and powertrain.&#8221; Using the example of the upcoming Ariya, he told <em><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/top+gear\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Top Gear<\/a><\/em> that it doesn&#8217;t just mean a bigger battery. The Ariya already has a performance model, the dual-motor Platinum+ boasting 389 horsepower and all-wheel-drive, which is a <span id=\"cwos\" class=\"qv3Wpe\">151-horse<\/span> bump over the front-wheel-drive&#8217;s 238. &#8220;So we need to go higher that that,&#8221; Cartier explained.<\/p>\n<p>Other companies have also hinted at performance sub brands for <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">electric cars<\/a>, whether it&#8217;s all-new like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/04\/28\/vw-id4-gtx-revealed\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Volkswagen&#8217;s GTX<\/a> line or piggy-backing on an existing line like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/05\/03\/hyundai-rimac-break-up-porsche\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Hyundai&#8217;s electric N car<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s up to each brand to see if they can forge a unique path. Nismo has quite a bit of heritage and capital built up with enthusiasts.
