American production should start in 2024, with an &#8220;experienced&#8221; manufacturer chosen late this year. This inaugural truck will be followed by lighter-duty Class 5 (9.8-ton) and Class 6 (13-ton) models in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The Class 7 Volta Zero&#8217;s range is short, with modular <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblotg.com\/tag\/battery\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\" rel=\"noopener\">batteries<\/a> offering between 95 to 125 miles of driving. That&#8217;s more than enough for city deliveries, however. Volta is also betting that 250-kW DC fast charging will ease any range anxiety. You completely recharge the Zero in slightly over an hour at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2019-04-24-penske-fast-charging-stations-electric-trucks.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">right station<\/a>. Moreover, the company has taken advantage of the switch to electric motors to improve safety \u2014 a lower, center-mounted driver&#8217;s seat should reduce the usual truck blind spots.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s pressure for Volta to move quickly. Fellow Swedish company <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volvo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Volvo<\/a> has already introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/02\/14\/volvo-trucks-lights-electric-vnr-semi-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">multiple electric medium-duty trucks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/04\/09\/freightliner-electric-truck-ecascadia-em2-order-production\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">American rival Freightliner has the eM2<\/a>. Still, these are typically conventional designs that just happen to be electric, rather than from-scratch EVs.
