{"id":21936,"date":"2022-05-10T21:00:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T01:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=21936"},"modified":"2022-05-10T21:00:08","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T01:00:08","slug":"vw-wants-to-resurrect-scout-as-a-rivian-like-off-road-ev-brand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=21936","title":{"rendered":"VW wants to resurrect Scout as a Rivian-like off-road EV brand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VW\u2019s advisory board is expected to approve a proposal tomorrow to spin off a new EV company centered around off-road vehicles, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/volkswagen-is-bringing-back-the-scout-the-suv-pioneer-as-an-ev-11652220001\">first reported by WSJ<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company will resurrect the classic nameplate from the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Harvester_Scout\">International Harvester Scout<\/a>, a Jeep-like off-road vehicle from the 60s and 70s, and fill a similar niche as the Rivian R1T as an electric competitor to off-road enthusiast trucks like the Ford Raptor, Jeep Gladiator and the like, but at a lower price point than the Rivian.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors surfaced last year that VW was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motortrend.com\/news\/volkswagen-international-harvester-scout-ev\/\">thinking about bringing back the Scout brand<\/a> (which they just gained rights in in 2021) to help them tackle the US market, where SUVs are popular and VW has historically underperformed. VW America boss Johan de Nysschen stated that he\u2019d like to see something similar to the Rivian, but \u201cat a $40,000 price point instead of $70,000\u201d \u2013 though the stated price point came before many of the inflation and supply challenges that have hit the EV market this year.<\/p>\n<p>Now unnamed sources within VW have said that the plan seems to be going forward. If approved, the plan would bring Scout SUVs and trucks to market in the US 2026, with an eventual target of 250,000 unit sales per year. There are currently no plans to bring the Scout to market elsewhere, though those decisions could be made in the future.<\/p>\n<p>This is later than many other entrants into the burgeoning EV truck market, which are largely hitting the road around this year. <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/rivian-r1t\/\">Rivian\u2019s R1T<\/a> has been <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/04\/05\/rivian-reports-producing-2553-evs-in-q1-of-2022-delivering-1227-of-them\/\">out for a few months<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/gmc-hummer-ev\/\">GMC Hummer EV<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/04\/28\/gmc-hummer-ev-pickup-trucks-selling-for-250000\/\">just trickling out into the public\u2019s hands<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/ford-f-150-lightning\/\">Ford F-150 Lightning<\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/05\/02\/f-150-lightning-deliveries-begin-with-even-more-horsepower-payload-capacity-plus-real-time-range-estimates-while-towing\/\">shipping imminently<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the F-150 is targeted more as a full-size work truck than an off-road truck, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/04\/07\/review-gmc-hummer-ev\/\">Hummer is entirely excessive<\/a> and somewhat in a class of its own. Presumably this would include new manufacturing facilities, as rather than sharing a platform with VW\u2019s other EVs, the Scout would have its own platform dedicated to off-roading and higher ground clearance. VW currently uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/04\/13\/vw-preparing-improvements-meb-electric-vehicles-range-435-miles-700-km\/\">MEB platform<\/a> for its new electric vehicles, but the Scout would mark a departure from that platform.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-electrek-s-take\">Electrek\u2019s Take<\/h2>\n<p>Currently, Rivian occupies a pretty unique space among electric vehicles. While some other EVs can be used in light off-road situations, the Rivian is a <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/04\/14\/rivian-r1t-electric-pickup-spotted-pulling-semi-truck-stuck-road\/\">truly capable vehicle<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/09\/28\/rivian-r1t-first-drive-easily-the-best-pickup-ive-ever-driven-both-off-road-and-on\/\">competes with and beats competitor gas trucks<\/a> in many off-road (and on-road) tasks. That\u2019s why Electrek picked it as our <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/12\/17\/rivian-r1t-electrek-vehicle-of-the-year-2021\/\">2021 Vehicle of the Year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So there is room for the Scout to come in and occupy a similar niche at a lower price point \u2013 or even to possibly beat Rivian at their game. But we have years between now and then, so surely the market will develop more by the time VW comes around in 2026 (for example, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/03\/03\/kia-turn-hyundais-counterpart-expects-14-bev-models-by-2027-plans-to-be-1-global-purpose-built-vehicle-provider-by-2030\/\">Kia EV9 in 2023<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/01\/05\/2024-chevy-silverado-ev-unveiled-400-miles-migate-worksite-power-and-more\/\">Chevy Silverado EV in 2024<\/a>, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/guides\/tesla-cybertruck\/\">Tesla Cybertruck<\/a> in 20-who-the-heck-knows).<\/p>\n<p>Especially given the strength of the US SUV market. Despite extremely high gas prices, Americans seemingly aren\u2019t interested in shaking their addiction to larger personal vehicles, and VW has not generally shined in this sector. So this is new territory for them, and a large addressable market which they have so far not tapped. Plus, if people are going to keep buying large inefficient vehicles, the least we can do is make them electric.<\/p>\n<p>I will say that I continue to be somewhat skeptical of the way that the auto industry brands their EV efforts. While <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/03\/29\/its-not-april-fools-yet-vw-will-change-its-us-name-to-voltswagen\/\">Voltswagen<\/a> and their CEO Herbert Diess have clearly <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/10\/20\/vw-shows-why-youd-be-dumb-to-buy-one-of-its-ice-cars-now\/\">shown more interest in EVs than most of the industry<\/a>, there is still an element of detachment in the way they separate some EV brands from gas brands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNormal\u201d cars get \u201cnormal\u201d model names like Tiguan and Passat, whereas EVs get weird names and sub-brands like \u201cID.4\u201d and \u201cID. CROZZ.\u201d  Weird names can be confusing or off-putting to consumers, though collecting them into a sub-brand can help add clarity about EV models. At the very least, though, sub-brands show that companies are separating their \u201cmain\u201d brands, the ones they <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/01\/12\/volkswagen-doubles-electric-vehicle-deliveries-in-2021\/\">still make 92% of their sales from<\/a>, from the upstart electric models.<\/p>\n<p>VW Group <em>has<\/em> been one of the few to give a \u201creal\u201d model name to one of its EVs, with the Porsche Taycan. And some other companies are resurrecting or co-opting old nameplates for their new EVs \u2013 such as Ford with the Mustang Mach-E and GM with the Hummer EV. The Scout will fit somewhere in the middle of this spectrum \u2013 a real, normal model name (yay!), resurrecting an old brand\u2026 though still separated from the \u201cmain\u201d VW brand into its own separate and seemingly largely independent company.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure if I prefer the separation into a new company or not \u2013 on the one hand, they can be free to focus their design and engineering efforts on making EVs and EVs alone, but on the other hand, I would like those design efforts to influence the rest of VW and drag the entire company over to EVs faster than their stated timelines. We need companies to take EVs seriously, and do it quickly, and stop building gas cars as soon as possible, so we\u2019re not spending the next half-century living with (or <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2020\/06\/29\/air-pollution-premature-death-harvard-study\/\">dying from<\/a>) pollution produced by gas cars that are <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/11\/12\/why-any-post-2035-ambition-for-ending-gas-car-sales-is-pathetic\/\">just entering the design process today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, as usual, we hope this new effort is successful \u2013 and that VW doesn\u2019t wait for its success to convert the rest of their production to EV as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think about the new Scout EV, and about VW forming a new company to make it?
