{"id":22028,"date":"2022-05-12T00:04:01","date_gmt":"2022-05-12T04:04:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=22028"},"modified":"2022-05-12T00:04:01","modified_gmt":"2022-05-12T04:04:01","slug":"1135832_with-lordstown-deal-complete-foxconn-pivots-to-making-evs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=22028","title":{"rendered":"With Lordstown deal complete, Foxconn pivots to making EVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">Lordstown Motors on Wednesday announced the completion of the sale of its former GM factory to Hon Hai Technology Group\u2014otherwise known as Foxconn, best known as the contract maker of the iPhone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>That makes Foxconn an automaker, and enables several potential EV-making activities at the Lordstown, Ohio site.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>One of them is the assembly of the Lordstown Endurance electric pickup, which will be overseen by Foxconn as a contract manufacturer \u201cwith no interruption in operations,\u201d according to a release from Lordstown. The companies plan for production of the electric truck to start in the third quarter of 2022, with first commercial deliveries in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Foxconn will also invest $100 million in a joint venture that will work with Lordstown Motors and engineer vehicles to be based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1130008_iphone-maker-foxconn-launches-open-platform-for-evs-solid-state-battery-by-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Foxconn\u2019s MiH (mobility in harmony) platform<\/a>. The joint venture, owned 55% by Foxconn and 45% by Lordstown, is to be called MIH EV Design LLC and will \u201cdevelop electric vehicles for the global market.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100749949_m\" title=\"Lordstown Endurance\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Lordstown Endurance\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lordstown-endurance_100749949_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/lordstown-endurance_100749949_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lordstown-endurance_100749949_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/lordstown-endurance_100749949_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/lordstown-endurance_100749949_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/lordstown-endurance_100749949_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Lordstown Endurance<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The joint venture could essentially be the missing piece that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135807_lordstown-endurance-ev-production-needs-more-cash-foxconn-fizzle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">permits Lordstown to be viable<\/a> beyond the start of Endurance production.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>Specifically, the companies said, those would be both for the North American commercial vehicle market and for other OEMs internationally, and the joint venture will aim \u201cto achieve production scale at lower volumes and with a shorter time to market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><strong\/><\/strong>The deal otherwise continues mostly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1134148_lordstown-endurance-electric-truck-delayed-to-q3-2022-as-foxconn-acquires-factory\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as laid out in November 2021<\/a>, including $260 million in proceeds to Lordstown Motors, plus a previous $50 million common stock purchase. Foxconn has proposed assembling the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1135077_fisker-reservations-ohio-built-pear-urban-ev\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$30,000 Fisker Pear urban EV<\/a> at the Lordstown plant.
