{"id":22164,"date":"2022-05-13T12:08:31","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T16:08:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=22164"},"modified":"2022-05-13T12:08:31","modified_gmt":"2022-05-13T16:08:31","slug":"nissan-considers-third-us-factory-ev-demand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=22164","title":{"rendered":"Nissan considers third plant in U.S. to meet EV demand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>YOKOHAMA, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/japan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">Japan<\/a> \u2014 <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Nissan<\/a> is considering adding a new auto plant in the U.S. to keep up with growing demand for <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">electric vehicles<\/a>, a top executive at the Japanese automaker said Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt may not be a surprise that we go for a third plant,\u201d Chief Operating Officer Ashwani Gupta told reporters at Yokohama headquarters.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/NSANY\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\" rel=\"noopener\">Nissan Motor Co<\/a>. now has two auto plants in the U.S. One in Canton, Mississippi makes the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/titan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Titan<\/a> pickup truck and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/altima\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Altima<\/a> sedan, among other models. The other in Smyrna, Tennessee makes the Leaf <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/electric\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">electric car<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/nissan\/pathfinder\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Pathfinder<\/a> sport utility vehicle and other models.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the plants employs thousands of workers and has produced millions of Nissan vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The third plant would not just be an added assembly line to an existing plant but a totally new facility, although it may be built as an extension of an existing plant, Gupta said. That would add several thousand jobs in the area, although its realization would be some years down the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe importance of localization will increase year on year,\u201d Gupta said.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the region, customers may receive incentives for buying electric vehicles, and the fluctuating foreign exchange rate may also make localized production more desirable, according to Gupta.<\/p>\n<p>His comments come a day after Nissan reported profitability for the first time in three fiscal years, despite challenges in the overall auto industry stemming from a shortage of chips because of restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan, allied with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/renault\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Renault<\/a> SA of France, recorded a profit of 215.5 billion yen ($1.7 billion) for the fiscal year through March, a reversal from the 448.7 billion yen loss the previous fiscal year.<\/p>\n<p>Gupta\u2019s comments also reflect a growing shift toward ecological vehicles to support sustainable forms of energy and transportation amid worries about <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/climate+change\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">climate change<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Gupta said Nissan, as an alliance partner, would support Renault in its recently floated idea to possibly spin off its electric vehicle division. But he made clear Nissan would not take similar action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s too early to say we go in one direction,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan\u2019s products were more diversified because it had the key markets of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/china\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">China<\/a> and North America in addition to Japan and Europe, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gupta declined to comment on what might be desirable for the future leadership at Nissan, stressing that special company committees were charged with that task.<\/p>\n<p>Nissan has focused on strengthening its corporate governance after <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/carlos+ghosn\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">Carlos Ghosn<\/a>, who led Nissan for two decades, was arrested on criminal charges in 2018. Ghosn says he is innocent.
