American car shoppers could buy a new Legacy Outback sedan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2021\/08\/junkyard-find-1999-subaru-legacy-outback-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">all the way through 2007<\/a>, and they could also get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/buy\/2007-Subaru-Legacy-2.5i_Limited__4dr_Wagon\/review\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">an ordinary Legacy station wagon through that year<\/a>. After that, the Legacy wagon became available as an Outback only, dropping the Legacy name once and for all. Here&#8217;s one of those hard-to-find 21st-century Legacy wagons, spotted in a Colorado self-service yard.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111634\/02-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While US-market Outbacks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/11\/08\/junkyard-gem-2001-subaru-outback-duct-tape-interior-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">lost all their external Legacy badging<\/a> starting in 2000, they were still considered Legacies by Subaru and any organization registering or <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-insurance\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">insuring<\/a> them. This confused everyone, especially since the low-end Legacy L and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/03\/07\/junkyard-gem-2000-subaru-legacy-gt-limited-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">snazzified Legacy GT<\/a> still sported full model-name and trim-level badging.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111635\/04-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>To muddy the waters further, every new Subaru sold in America got all-wheel-drive starting in the 1996 model year, yet stuck with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/04\/09\/junkyard-gem-1994-subary-legacy-ls-4wd-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">1994-style AWD badges<\/a> long after that.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111655\/31-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In any case, hardly anybody was buying Outback sedans by 2002, and \u2014 at least in Colorado \u2014 even fewer wanted the Legacy wagon without the Outback&#8217;s lifted suspension, higher roof, body cladding and winter-friendly features. I see <em>hundreds<\/em> of Outback wagons of the 2000-2004 generation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Subaru.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">in Front Range car graveyards<\/a> every year (as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/diy\/a31819590\/sometimes-the-random-cross-marque-horn-swap-just-bolts-right-in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">owning one myself<\/a>), and this is the first regular Legacy wagon I&#8217;ve seen in quite a while.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111637\/06-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>So why did someone buy this one, twenty years ago? I&#8217;m guessing the $19,995 sticker price (about $32,640 in 2022 dollars) looked appealing next to the Legacy Outback wagon&#8217;s $22,895 ($37,375 now) price tag, especially since they nearly identical under the skin.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111648\/18-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You could get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/04\/10\/junkyard-gem-2003-subaru-outback-h6-3-0\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">an H6 engine<\/a> in some 2002 Legacy Outback models, but every other member of the American Legacy family got this 2.5-liter H4 rated at 166 horsepower.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111645\/14-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>A five-speed manual transmission was base equipment, but most Legacy buyers insisted on two-pedal driving by this time.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111639\/07-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s some rust around the fenderwells, but I think high miles and probably a worn-out engine sent this car to its final parking spot.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/11111643\/13-2002-Subaru-Legacy-Wagon-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The digital odometer requires <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/1Tk0tsE\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\" rel=\"noopener\">ECU<\/a> power to display anything, so we&#8217;ll never know the final mileage total.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Outback designation, introduced in America on off-road-enhanced versions of the Subaru Legacy and Impreza for the 1995 model year, eventually proved so popular on a single model \u2014 the Legacy station wagon \u2014 that Subaru ditched it from usage on any other vehicle.
