Scout, which revives the name of the classic International Harvester Scout, is scheduled to show prototypes in 2023 and start production in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>But dealers were caught off guard by the announcement, leading some to wonder if VW was planning to adopt Tesla&#8217;s direct-sales retail model for the new brand, according to <em>Automotive News<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image_wrapper first_wrapper\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" name=\"tccimg_100746951_m\" title=\"Polestar Space\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAD\/ACwAAAAAAQABAAACADs=\" alt=\"Polestar Space\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"first_image lazy\" data-width=\"1024\" data-height=\"576\" data-url=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/polestar-space_100746951_l.jpg\" data-src-h=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/hug\/polestar-space_100746951_h.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/polestar-space_100746951_l.jpg\" data-src-l=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/lrg\/polestar-space_100746951_l.jpg\" data-src-m=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/med\/polestar-space_100746951_m.jpg\" data-src-s=\"https:\/\/images.hgmsites.net\/sml\/polestar-space_100746951_s.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Polestar Space<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>VW hasn&#8217;t revealed important details, such as who will manage a standalone Scout brand or what platforms its EVs might use. But keeping Scout separate from the main VW brand could create an opening for a different retail model.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Although Polestar is an offshoot of Volvo Cars and its parent Geely, Polestar has avoided issues with Volvo&#8217;s United States dealer network by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1133653_how-to-buy-a-polestar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">looping it in on service<\/a>. The brand has been opening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1131462_polestar-ev-brand-plans-15-more-us-showrooms-including-detroit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polestar Spaces<\/a> in lieu of traditional showrooms.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Tesla didn&#8217;t shy away from pointing out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greencarreports.com\/news\/1077896_tesla-opens-portland-store-passes-a-million-visitors-so-far-in-2012\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its store model<\/a> started with the Model S was developed directly from Apple Stores. None of these automakers have a traditional dealer network to work around, though.<\/p>\n<p data-pm-slice=\"1 1 []\">Even Tesla has had to fight dealer lobby groups and state franchise laws, so moving away from the traditional franchised dealership model comes with risks.
