Region 4 members meet with Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI)<\/small><\/em><\/p>\n

The morning gets busy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Day three of the National Cap Conference began as the delegates attended Regional breakfasts to plan their lobby day.\u00a0 Among elected officials who also shared breakfast with UAW delegates were Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI 8th<\/sup>), \u00a0Debbie Dingell (D-MI 12th<\/sup>) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI 13th<\/sup>) among others.<\/p>\n

While CAP Conference Delegates planned their day, the National Veterans Advisory Council met to discuss issues affecting our many UAW members who have served in the military.\u00a0 President Curry \u2013 himself an Army veteran \u2013 addressed them at their breakfast.<\/p>\n

Michele Springer, Local 1248, Region 1<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Michele Springer, member of Local 1248 in Region 1, hit the ground running today.\u00a0 \u201cI am gaining so much knowledge this week to take back to my local and other 1248 members.\u201d\u00a0 Springer added, \u201cI want to encourage the younger members in my facility to get involved with politics.\u00a0 We have to continue to hold politicians accountable and stay abreast of the laws being put in place that will have an effect our jobs and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tim Walbolt, Local 1435, Region 2B<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Tim Walbolt also feels urgency about the work of this week. \u201cMy biggest goal is to talk about the Build Back Better plan. It\u2019s my main focus,\u201d the Recording Secretary of the Toledo Area CAP Council and member of Local 1435 in Region 2B says.\u00a0 \u201cWe have a small part that is assembled at our Stellantis Powertrain Plant.\u00a0 Many of the pieces are made overseas.\u00a0 We would like the support to have more of those parts made in the United States, particularly in Ohio,\u201d Walbolt says.\u00a0 \u201cIt is an honor to be here to represent our membership and my plant.\u00a0 It is also a responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wence Valentin III, Presiden, Local 774, Region 9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Wence Valentin III, President of Local 774 in Region 9, knows that there is a lot at stake, especially for his plant which produces engines.\u00a0 \u201cWe represent about 4,000 retirees from my local.\u00a0 As a former benefits representative, I realize how important it is for our retiree members to be protected by prescription drug prices. Health care is also important for striking workers. In 2023, it is going to be a battle and we need to have all of the ammunition that we can to fight these corporations.\u00a0 That is very important to me and our membership.\u201d<\/p>\n

Delegates head to Capitol Hill<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The afternoon was filled with lobby visits and meetings with the delegate\u2019s representatives.\u00a0 UAW CAP delegates applied the information learned in the meetings as they discussed the important issues on the Hill.\u00a0 The objective was to take current issues that affect labor and communities to the people that have been elected to help solve problems and hold them accountable.\u00a0 Union members have a voice and as activists, can help shape the narrative of laws and policies locally and nationally.<\/p>\n

Diana Swartz, Recording Secretary, West Central 4 Council, Local 450, Region 4<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

For Diana Swartz, Recording Secretary for West Central 4 Council and member of Local 450 in Region 4, lobbying is a highlight of the week.\u00a0 \u201cThe speakers were great, but I\u2019m very much keyed into talking to our elected representatives and holding them accountable.\u201d\u00a0 A self-described political junkie, Swartz is motivated to remind her elected officials about the importance of representing the members of their district who come out to campaign for them.<\/p>\n
