He did hint that the project might begin this year.\u00a0As reported by <em>BenarNews<\/em>, the minister said that <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%7D\">Tesla<\/a> agreed to build a battery and electric vehicle plant at an industrial complex in the country&#8217;s Central Java province.<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13\">\n<p>&#8220;God willing, Tesla will enter Indonesia this year. But I can&#8217;t announce the month yet. Let&#8217;s wait, because we haven&#8217;t signed an agreement yet. How much investment is still being kept secret, still waiting. In a video released after the meeting, Tesla&#8217;s CEO said he was &#8220;<em>fired up<\/em>&#8221; by Indonesia&#8217;s enthusiasm, adding that Tesla and SpaceX are &#8220;<em>looking closely to a potential collaboration on many, many fronts.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has been trying to attract investment from Tesla for a few years now, seeking to take advantage of its position as the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/361631\/tesla-consortium-nickel-cobalt-indonesia\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22361631%22%2C%22section%22%3A%221%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22tesla-consortium-nickel-cobalt-indonesia%22%7D\">world&#8217;s largest producer of nickel<\/a>. The metal is a critical element for the cathodes of electric vehicle batteries.<\/p>\n<p>By 2025, the island nation has set a goal for 20% of the cars built domestically to be electric. That&#8217;s an ambitious target seeing as most of the cars Indonesia currently makes\u2014about 1 million a year\u2014are powered by internal combustion engines.<\/p>\n<p>The country is trying to grow its EV market, with Hyundai recently starting production of the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/reviews\/586981\/hyundai-ioniq-5-vw-id4-comparison\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"0\" data-params=\"%7B%22article_edition_id%22%3A%22586981%22%2C%22section%22%3A%222%22%2C%22alias%22%3A%22hyundai-ioniq-5-vw-id4-comparison%22%7D\">Ioniq 5<\/a> in Indonesia while China&#8217;s Wuling Motors is expected to make small EVs at its Indonesian plant later this year.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Hyundai and LG Energy Solution started construction of a $1.1 billion electric vehicle battery plant near the capital city of Jakarta. When finished, the factory is expected to produce enough battery cells to power 150,000 electric vehicles a year.
