The brand-new <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/golf\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">Golf<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/04\/28\/1977-volkswagen-rabbit-junkyard-gem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">aka Rabbit<\/a> appeared the following year, and alongside it came a sporty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2015\/09\/21\/giorgetto-giugiaro-launching-new-design-firm-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Giugiaro-styled<\/a> derivative. That car was the Scirocco, and I&#8217;ve found one of those first-generation machines in a Denver-area self-service yard.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093844\/43-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>By 1979, the Scirocco had to compete against such sporty Japanese coupes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/09\/05\/junkyard-gem-1980-datsun-310-gx-coupe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">the Datsun 310GX<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/01\/02\/junkyard-gem-1982-honda-prelude\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Honda Prelude<\/a>, not to mention <a href=\"http:\/\/storm.oldcarmanualproject.com\/fiat1281976.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the 128 Sport Hatchback<\/a> and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/12\/19\/junkyard-find-1979-fiat-131-brava-sedan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">the Brava<\/a> two-door from <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/fiat\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Fiat<\/a>. American Motors even offered <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/AMC\/1979_AMC\/1979-Sprint-Brochure\/slides\/1979_Spirit-06-07.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">an AMX-ized version of the Spirit<\/a>, which beat the Scirocco on price and came with a high-torque straight-six engine. Still, the Scirocco sold well enough here around that time.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093839\/35-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one suffers from some rust damage in the usual spots, in addition to being generally beat up.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093822\/09-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This JVC cassette deck dates back to the middle 1980s, so it&#8217;s possible that this car has been nonoperational since Reagan was in the White House.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093818\/03-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The interior is loaded with what looks like decades of rodent detritus, no doubt laden with <a href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/hantavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">hantavirus<\/a>. I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/11\/19\/junkyard-gem-1986-ford-escort-pony-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">seen worse<\/a>, though\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/09\/05\/junkyard-gem-1958-vauxhall-victor-super-estate-station-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">a\u00a0<em>lot<\/em> worse<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093830\/19-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 1,457cc straight-four in this car had a 71-horsepower rating in 1979, which wasn&#8217;t so bad for a car that didn&#8217;t quite weigh 2,000 pounds.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093825\/14-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The German-language fuel-rating sticker is a nice <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/lincoln\/continental\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">Continental<\/a> touch, though the RON octane rating probably convinced many American Scirocco owners to use premium gas when they didn&#8217;t need to (91 RON is about the same as our 87 octane).<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21093828\/16-1979-Volkswagen-Scirocco-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You could get this car with an automatic transmission, but that added 125 bucks to the purchase price (about $<a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/bmw\/530\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">530<\/a> in inflation-adjusted 2022 dollars). This one has the base <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">four-on-the-floor manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/21145912\/Mickey-Rat-Discusses-the-VW-Scirocco.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Back in the early 1980s, when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armstrongartandnoveltyhut.com\/comics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the brilliant cartoonist Robert Armstrong<\/a> wished to show how The Man would brainwash <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toonopedia.com\/mickyrat.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Mickey Rat<\/a> into being a productive member of society, he gave the once-rebellious rodent a Scirocco.
