That might seem ironic given that the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/gti\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">GTI<\/a> has long been described as the only car you need. It\u2019s fun, well-made, well-equipped, reasonably efficient and practical. Ditto the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/golf+r\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Golf R<\/a>, which adds even more fun and all-weather assurance thanks to its all-wheel-drive system. The trouble is, practicality tends to be redefined once you need to put a kid in the back seat and the mountains of stuff they require in the trunk. A GTI <em>could<\/em> get the job done, but it wouldn\u2019t be easy. Enter the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/arteon\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">Arteon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For 2022, it now has the same new engine as the new Golf R, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that produces 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. It offers the previous Golf R\u2019s Haldex all-wheel-drive system, but comes standard with front-wheel drive. That\u2019s a massive amount of thrust to channel through the front wheels only, but it manages to quell torque steer remarkably well \u2026 just like the GTI, actually. And indeed, the Arteon absolutely feels like it sprouted from the same branch of the family tree as the GTI and Golf R. That hasn\u2019t always been the case with the Arteon, but this latest iteration absolutely does \u00ad\u2013 even if this larger, heavier car on an older variation of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">VW<\/a>\u2019s MQB platform unsurprisingly can\u2019t match the verve of its smaller, newer siblings. It\u2019s a fun car to drive, and its massive back seat and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/audi\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Audi<\/a> Sportback-style trunk grant it that extra practicality that those who\u2019ve outgrown their GTI or Golf R are looking for. It\u2019s definitely a more engaging alternative than a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/09\/15\/2022-volkswagen-taos-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">Taos<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/11\/01\/2022-volkswagen-tiguan-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Tiguan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the Arteon starts to make less sense once you look outside the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">Volkswagen<\/a> family. Its starting price is north of $40,000 with a loaded SEL Premium R-Line that crosses $50,000. That might be reasonable given the Golf R\u2019s price tag, but you\u2019re in <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/luxury-sedan\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">luxury sedan<\/a> territory there, with a list of alternatives that would make this paragraph laughably long. True, the Arteon is now more powerful than most of those at this price range (usually considerably so), but the fact remains that a Volkswagen sedan will never be considered a luxury sedan. The base SE also gains the R-Line\u2019s sportier looks. This is on top of a substantial overhaul last year that brought chassis improvements (the steering in particular is dramatically better), higher quality interior materials, updated tech and tweaked styling.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/23182715\/2022-Volkswagen-Arteon-interior.jpg\"\/> <img class=\"grp-half lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/23182734\/2022-Volkswagen-Arteon-touchscreen-with-Android-Auto.jpg\"\/><img class=\"grp-half lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/23182657\/2022-Volkswagen-Arteon-wireless-smartphone-chargin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"interior\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\"\/>What are the Arteon interior and in-car technology like?<\/h2>\n<p>As much as Volkswagen improved the Arteon\u2019s interior last year with higher-quality materials and better trim, it really only brought it up to snuff for midsize sedans like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/12\/06\/2022-honda-accord-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">the Honda Accord<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/06\/2022-hyundai-sonata-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Hyundai Sonata<\/a>. There\u2019s absolutely nothing wrong with those \u00ad\u2013 they have lovely interiors, but they also don\u2019t start higher than $40,000. Compared to a similarly priced <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/mercedes_benz\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">Mercedes<\/a>, Audi, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/acura\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">Acura<\/a>, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/genesis\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Genesis<\/a>, etc., it\u2019s quite simply not as nice as those.<\/p>\n<p>Is it better than a GTI or Golf R? Absolutely, both in terms of materials quality as well as technology. The Arteon comes standard with Volkswagen\u2019s Digital Cockpit instrument panel and an 8-inch touchscreen that features VW\u2019s previous generation tech interface. That\u2019s actually a good thing, since the newer system in the GTI and Golf R is a hair-pulling affair.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-half lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/01\/13164007\/IMG_9945.jpg\"\/><img class=\"grp-half lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2021\/01\/13164014\/IMG_9950.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"size\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\"\/>How big is the Arteon?<\/h2>\n<p>The Arteon offers a clear size advantage when compared to VW\u2019s hot hatchbacks as well as similarly priced <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/car-finder\/luxury\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">luxury cars<\/a>. Although ultra-sleek sedans like the Arteon have traditionally come attached to a reduction in practicality, that\u2019s not the case here. The back seat provides plenty of legroom even when the driver seat is pushed all the way back, while providing sufficient headroom for someone 6-foot-3. It\u2019s actually similar to a <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/honda\/accord\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">Honda Accord<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2022\/01\/31\/2022-toyota-camry-buying-guide-review\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">Toyota Camry<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The trunk is similarly impressive. Opening its gaping hatchback lid reveals 27.2 cubic-feet of maximum cargo space, which is about 10 more than you&#8217;d get in a traditional family sedan. It\u2019s also what you\u2019d find in many small SUVs, although that volume is achieved in the Arteon with greater cargo area length and less height. Once you remove the rigid cargo cover and lower the 60\/40-split back seat, you&#8217;ll be able to transport large, boxy objects that don&#8217;t have a prayer of fitting in one of those sedans. Now, they won\u2019t be as large or boxy as what you can manage in an SUV (or even the GTI and Golf R with the back seat down), but this is nevertheless one of the Arteon\u2019s best attributes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"mpg\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:28;\"\/>What are the Arteon fuel economy and performance specs?<\/h2>\n<p>Every Arteon is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four that produces 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual, dubbed DSG, is standard. The base SE R-Line is front-wheel-drive, while the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line have 4Motion all-wheel drive.<\/p>\n<p>EPA-estimated <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/fuel+economy\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:29;\">fuel economy<\/a> is 24 miles per gallon city, 34 mpg highway and 28 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, which is excellent for such a powerful car. It falls to 22\/30\/25 for the all-wheel-drive trim levels.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/1600x900\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/05\/23182702\/2022-Volkswagen-Arteon-front-in-the-desert.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"drive\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:30;\"\/>What&#8217;s the Arteon like to drive?<\/h2>\n<p>After last year\u2019s chassis upgrades and this year\u2019s serious power infusion, the Arteon now drives like it sprouts from the same branch of the Volkswagen family tree as the GTI and Golf R (as opposed to the old <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/volkswagen\/passat\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:31;\">Passat<\/a>). The steering\u2019s effort and response are indicative of the GTI\u2019s, as well as its ability to quell torque steer with front-wheel drive. It impressively won\u2019t saw the wheel out of your hand when you gun those 300 horses and 295 lb-ft. They will, however, overwhelm the traction control system and causes wheel hop, which is why opting for all-wheel drive is still a good idea. It sends as much as 50% of available power to the rear, reacting to and anticipating reduced traction up front. A brake-based XDS \u201ccross-differential\u201d system mimics a limited-slip differential by <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/brakes\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:32;\">braking<\/a> the inside rear wheel while turning in order to reduce understeer.<\/p>\n<p>We found the Arteon surprisingly fun to drive around tight, technical mountain roads \u2013 either with front- or all-wheel drive. There could definitely be more feel from the steering, but that can be said about many sport sedans. The standard adaptive suspension firms itself up depending on drive mode: Comfort, Normal or Sport. There\u2019s an Individual mode available to mix and match your choices, which we utilized after finding the Sport suspension a bit too firm on an extra-bumpy stretch of mountain road. This variability and customizability are appreciated and certainly more indicative of a luxury sport sedan than a Honda Accord, for instance. Indeed, many luxury sedans don\u2019t include adjustable suspensions at this price point. The other two trims come standard with all-wheel drive: the SEL R-Line at $46,745 and SEL Premium R-Line at $50,745.<\/p>\n<p>Even the base Arteon is very well-equipped. It includes 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, adaptive dampers, proximity entry and push-button start, blind-spot warning, front and rear parking sensors, three-zone automatic climate control, leatherette upholstery, eight-way power front seats with four-way lumbar and heating, the Digital Cockpit instrument panel, 8-inch touchscreen and wireless phone charging. For 2022, the base Arteon also gets the R-Line appearance package of various gloss-black exterior trim and paddle shifters.<\/p>\n<p>Key upgrades with the SEL include 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, driver memory settings and the extra driver assist features listed in the section below. The SEL Premium then adds 20-inch wheels, power trunk lid, an enhanced parking camera system, rear-seat climate control, a heated steering wheel, a massaging driver seat, ventilated front seats and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.<\/p>\n<p>As with other Volkswagens, there are no factory options.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"safety\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:35;\"\/>What are the Arteon safety ratings and driver assistance features?<\/h2>\n<p>Every Arteon includes forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, plus blind-spot and rear-cross traffic warning. The SEL trims add lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability.<\/p>\n<p>The <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:36;\" rel=\"noopener\">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety<\/a> named the 2022 Arteon a Top Safety Pick, its second-highest award.
