One of them, lithium, is largely mined, refined and processed by China, though lithium deposits can be found worldwide. The news, as reported by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/china-ev-batteries-lithium-mining-51652889888\" rel=\" nofollow noopener sponsored\"><em>Barron\u2019s<\/em><\/a>, comes amidst surging EV demand as consumers begin to turn toward zero-emission technology \u2014\u00a0resulting in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evannex.com\/blogs\/news\/will-rising-lithium-prices-put-an-end-to-the-trend-toward-lfp-cells\" rel=\" nofollow noopener sponsored\">lithium price increases<\/a>\u00a0of as much as 400 percent over the last year.<\/p>\n<p>The International Energy Agency estimates the value of lithium sales to increase 20-fold in the decade leading up to 2030, and China is already leading the world\u2019s lithium market. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/tesla\/\" data-inline-widget=\"internal-links\" data-type-id=\"2\" data-params=\"%7B%22alias%22%3A%22tesla%22%7D\">Tesla<\/a> gets most of its lithium from the country, with some of it coming from companies with Argentinian mining operations. Still, estimates hold that China refines more than half of the world\u2019s lithium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt refines 60% of the world\u2019s lithium, controls 77% of global battery cell capacity and 60% of the world\u2019s battery component manufacturing,\u201d wrote Gavekal of China. \u201cOf 200 battery mega-factories in the pipeline to 2030, 148 are in China.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"video\" data-url-params=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sizer\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"data:image\/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAABAAAAAJCAYAAAA7KqwyAAAAGXRFWHRTb2Z0d2FyZQBBZG9iZSBJbWFnZVJlYWR5ccllPAAAABpJREFUeNpi\/P\/\/PwMlgImBQjBqwLAwACDAAOVfAw9\/ZDvcAAAAAElFTkSuQmCC\" alt=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/a0VjD7MN7cQ\" data-src-param=\"\">[embedded content]<\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><em>YouTube: Bloomberg Markets and Finance<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Still, Gavekal also says that the trade war lodged by the Trump administration against China and Brazil has affected how each country views U.S. automakers \u2014\u00a0including Tesla.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe US brand has lost much of its shine in Latin America in recent years,\u201d wrote Gavekal. \u201cWhile Beijing courted Argentina and other countries across the region, the U.S. under the Trump administration launched a trade war against it and Brazil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For now, China&#8217;s lithium advantage will mean continued price increases, and Tesla&#8217;s continued reliance on the country for lithium, alongside several other EV makers.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Tesla has ongoing supply deals with China-based lithium refiners Ganfeng and Yahua.
