{"id":23720,"date":"2022-06-03T04:30:50","date_gmt":"2022-06-03T08:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=23720"},"modified":"2022-06-03T04:30:50","modified_gmt":"2022-06-03T08:30:50","slug":"usps-mail-delivery-electric-mail-bike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=23720","title":{"rendered":"The USPS is already testing mail delivery by electric bike with these neat little US-built mail bikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/05\/14\/with-outrage-over-the-uspss-gas-guzzler-plans-should-it-buy-these-electric-cargo-bikes-instead\/\">an opinion piece<\/a> about how the United States Postal Service (USPS) could look to solve its gas-guzzler truck problem by following Europe\u2019s example of delivering mail with smaller electric cargo bikes. As it turns out, the postal service has already been testing this out, and the little electric mail bikes look pretty snazzy too.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are they designed to carry heavy cargo loads, but they\u2019re also built in the US by Montana-based Coaster Cycles.<\/p>\n<p>The electric mail bikes are built on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coastercycles.com\/freighter-aw\/\">Freighter AW platform<\/a>, which can be modified for various types of commercial e-cargo bike applications.<\/p>\n<p>Technically it\u2019s an electric cargo tricycle, but it almost looks more like a cargo van than a bike.<\/p>\n<p>The giant rear cargo box provides 72 cubic feet (over 2,000 liters) of space for mail, and the bike can hold up to 400 lb. (181 kg) of cargo. Hydraulic disc brakes help bring all of that weight to a stop quickly and safely.<\/p>\n<p>Powering the bike is Bosch\u2019s Cargo Line e-bike drive system, which supplies the rear wheels with 85 Nm of torque. The drive system is paired with a 500 Wh battery to power the mid-drive motor, though multiple batteries can likely be swapped in to extend the range. Christopher Jackson, the director of city delivery, explained in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nalc.org\/news\/the-postal-record\/2021\/september-2021\/document\/DCD.pdf\"><em>The Postal Record<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\" readability=\"12\">\n<p>While there are still many things to consider and evaluate with these new e-bikes, I am hopeful that the Postal Service will continue exploring eco-friendly options for city delivery. I enjoy hearing feedback from the carriers who are participating in the tests. Thank you to the Florida bicycle carriers for welcoming NALC representatives and providing valuable insight, as well as for their dedication every day as they pedal many miles through their communities delivering the mail. As always, my heartfelt thanks goes out to all city carriers, as you continue to provide excellent service to the American people despite the many challenges.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The news of additional electric vehicles working their way into mail carriers\u2019 routes couldn\u2019t come soon enough.<\/p>\n<p>The United States Postal Service is currently dealing with the fallout from backlash to its new gas-guzzler mail truck plans.<\/p>\n<p>The USPS initially announced that it would be purchasing up to 165,000 mostly gas-powered Next Generation Delivery Vehicles (NGDVs) from Oshkosh Defense Corp.<\/p>\n<p>The original plan was for<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/02\/23\/usps-postal-fleet-contract-doesnt-even-go-all-electric\/\">\u00a010% of those vehicles to be electric<\/a>, though the USPS then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2022\/03\/25\/usps-doubles-order-electric-vehicles-but-buying-inefficient-gas-trucks\/\">increased that percentage to 20%<\/a>\u00a0for their initial order of 50,000 vehicles. They argue that not only was the initial environmental assessment undertaken after the contract was announced, but that the assessment was deficient in considering air quality and climate impacts of the plan and did not seriously consider other alternatives to the gas guzzlers the USPS decided on.<\/p>\n<p>Per the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), signed in 1970, federal agencies must publish environmental impact statements (EIS) before any change in policy that is likely to have an environmental impact.<\/p>\n<p>But USPS\u2019s environmental assessment has been panned as insufficient not only by all the groups filing lawsuits today, but also the White House and EPA,\u00a0which sent letters criticizing the plan\u00a0(which also conflicts with\u00a0President Biden\u2019s order to convert the entire federal vehicle fleet to electric).
