When the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/lumina\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Chevrolet Lumina<\/a> got a refresh for 1995, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">GM<\/a> decided to revive the <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/monte+carlo\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">Monte Carlo<\/a> name on the coupe version. <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1995-Chevrolet\/1995-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">The new Lumina Carlo<\/a> lacked the rear-wheel-drive and fender bulges of its predecessors, but the good news was that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/07\/08\/junkyard-gem-1992-chevrolet-lumina-z34\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">the Lumina&#8217;s high-performance Z34 trim level<\/a> moved over to this car. Today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/JunkyardGalleryHome.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Junkyard Gem<\/a> is one of those Z34s, found in a Denver-area self-service yard last month.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110934\/21-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 1995-1997 Monte Carlo Z34s had a screaming 3.4-liter DOHC V6 rated at 215 horsepower and 220 pound-feet, but the 1998-1999 models received the good old 3.8-liter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1832656\/cut-down-engine-week-buick-v6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:8;\">pushrod Buick V6<\/a> and its 200 horses. At least the torque went up slightly, to 225 lb-ft. Other big <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:9;\">Chevy<\/a> news for 1998 was the demise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murileemartin.com\/Junkyard\/JunkyardGallery-Geo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:10;\">the Geo brand<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/07\/17\/junkyard-gem-1991-geo-prizm-gsi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:11;\">the Prizm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/11\/07\/junkyard-gem-1990-geo-metro-xfi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:12;\">Metro<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2018\/03\/03\/junkyard-gem-1995-geo-tracker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:13;\">Tracker<\/a> becoming <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/chevrolet\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:14;\">Chevrolets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110929\/15-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The last year for a production Monte Carlo with three pedals was <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1979-Chevrolet\/1979-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Brochure\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:15;\">all the way back in 1979<\/a>, when both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/classic-cars\/a34566051\/what-was-the-last-3-on-the-tree-column-shift-manual-car-americans-could-buy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:16;\">three-on-the-tree<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/columns\/a34301141\/what-was-the-final-us-market-car-to-get-a-4-speed-manual-transmission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:17;\">four-on-the-floor<\/a> versions were available. This car, like all 1998 W-Bodies, has a four-speed automatic.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110953\/50-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/>Only two trim levels were available for this car, the LS and the Z34. The price tag on the &#8217;98 Monte LS was $17,795 and the Monte Z34 cost $20,295 (that&#8217;s about $31,835 and\u00a0 $36,310 in 2022 dollars). Other &#8220;Z&#8221; Chevrolets over the years include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2021\/07\/05\/junkyard-gem-1987-chevrolet-cavalier-z24-hatchback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:18;\">the Z24<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2017\/07\/junkyard-find-1996-chevrolet-beretta-z26-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:19;\">Z26<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2019\/03\/12\/junkyard-gem-1985-chevrolet-camaro-z28\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:20;\">Z28<\/a>. Just to confuse everyone, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetruthaboutcars.com\/2021\/11\/junkyard-find-1985-chevrolet-cavalier-station-wagon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:21;\">the Cavalier had an F41 version<\/a> for a while.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110950\/41-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The LS and Z34 looked nearly identical at a glance (and both very closely resembled <a href=\"http:\/\/oldcarbrochures.org\/United%20States\/Chevrolet\/1998-Chevrolet\/1998%20Chevrolet%20Lumina\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:22;\">their Lumina sedan sibling<\/a>), but the &#8217;98 Z34 had 40 more horsepower than the LS.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110948\/40-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The interior is standard 1990s W-Body stuff. You&#8217;d be hard-pressed to say if those doors and seat panels came from a Monte Carlo, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2017\/08\/29\/junkyard-gem-2000-pontiac-grand-prix-daytona-500-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:23;\">Grand Prix<\/a>, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2020\/06\/04\/junkyard-gem-1996-oldsmobile-cutlass-supreme-sedan-phoenix-open-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:24;\">Cutlass Supreme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110927\/13-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>An AM\/FM radio with cassette deck was standard equipment in both the LS and Z34 Monte Carlos for 1998, but the original purchaser shelled out an additional 93 bucks ($166 today) for the CD player.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110942\/34-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>This one was living in South Dakota as recently as ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110920\/02-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The rust suggests that it spent most of its life in South Dakota or some similarly corrosion-friendly locale.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110951\/45-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>It may have been a good runner when it came to this place, but the Rust Monster doomed it.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110946\/38-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The owner&#8217;s manual and plenty of maintenance records were still in it, so this may have been a one-owner car.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"grp-full lazy\" alt=\"\" data-original=\"https:\/\/o.aolcdn.com\/images\/dims3\/GLOB\/legacy_thumbnail\/800x450\/format\/jpg\/quality\/85\/https:\/\/s.aolcdn.com\/os\/ab\/_cms\/2022\/06\/02110926\/10-1998-Chevrolet-Monte-Carlo-Z34-in-Colorado-Junkyard-Photo-by-Murilee-Martin.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoweek.com\/car-life\/a1854736\/leather-little-tree-air-fresheners-failed-save-these-cars-crusher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:25;\">find one in every car<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/jalopnik.com\/5348717\/repo-man-creator-alex-cox-tells-jalopnik-how-he-selected-the-films-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:26;\">You&#8217;ll see<\/a>.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"mQwROdUGkEc\" style=\"background-image: url('');\"\/>\n<p>Pretty much the same thing as a NASCAR Monte Carlo, apparently.<\/p>\n<lite-youtube videoid=\"HSpkNi2FtEg\" style=\"background-image: url('');\"\/>\n<p>Later on, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/2016\/11\/15\/junkyard-gem-2000-chevrolet-monte-carlo-ss-pace-car-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:27;\">Monte Carlos with Tasmanian Devil badging<\/a> were available from the factory.
