The year-to-date result is also weaker than a year ago (661,121, down 8.7%).<\/p>\n<p>The market situation is very challenging now, in big part due to supply shortages. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), even plug-in electric car sales decreased compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>Last month&#8217;s passenger plug-in electric car registrations amounted to <strong>22,787<\/strong>, which is <strong>0.8% less <\/strong>than a year ago. The market share improved to <strong>18.3%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As usually, a quick look at the data reveals that all-electric car sales continue to increase (although slower than previously, by 18% year-over-year), while plug-in hybrids are stuck in the red for another month (down 26%). PHEVs are now decreasing even faster than the overall market, while conventional hybrids are up 12%.<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully, plug-ins will return to faster growth once supply constraints will ease, but it might take some time.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BEVs: 15,448 <\/strong>(up 18% year-over-year) at market share of<strong> 12.4%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>PHEVs: 7,339 <\/strong>(down 26% year-over-year) at market share of <strong>5.9%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Total: 22,787 <\/strong>(down 0.8% year-over-year) at market share of <strong>18.3%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/plug-in-electric-car-registrations-in-the-uk-may-2022.png\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/plug-in-electric-car-registrations-in-the-uk-may-2022.png\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"898\" height=\"424\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>So far this year, more than 136,000 new passenger plug-in cars were registered in the UK, reaching an average market share of over 20%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New plug-in car registrations, year-to-date in 2022:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>BEVs: 92,512 <\/strong>(up 71% year-over-year) &#8211; market share of <strong>14.0%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>PHEVs: 43,549<\/strong> (down 5% year-over-year) &#8211; market share of <strong>6.6%<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Total: 136,061 <\/strong>(up 36% year-over-year) &#8211; market share of <strong>20.6%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/plug-in-electric-car-registrations-in-the-uk-may-2022-b.png\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/plug-in-electric-car-registrations-in-the-uk-may-2022-b.png\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"898\" height=\"409\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>More details, including also other types:<\/p>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\" data-width=\"80%\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/uk-car-reg-5-2022-source-smmt.jpg\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/uk-car-reg-5-2022-source-smmt.jpg\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"1875\" height=\"2200\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>Just like in April, there is no data about plug-in models and it appears that none of the stand-alone plug-in cars were able to enter the top 10, unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/insideevs.com\/news\/578839\/uk-plugin-car-sales-march2022\/\">in March, when two EVs were on the top<\/a>.<\/p>\n<section class=\"trinity-skip-it\" contenteditable=\"false\" draggable=\"true\" data-widget=\"special_image\" data-align=\"center\">\n<div class=\"spi_wrapper\"><a class=\"lightzoom\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/uk-car-reg-5-2022-source-smmt-b.jpg\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"custom-image\" draggable=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.motor1.com\/images\/custom\/thumbnail\/uk-car-reg-5-2022-source-smmt-b.jpg\" alt=\"external_image\" width=\"1375\" height=\"642\" loading=\"lazy\"\/> <\/a><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p>In terms of light commercial vehicles (LCV), some 22,000 were registered last month (down 25% year-over-year).
