In the initial years, touring cars competed in accordance with Group 2 regulations, including the BMW 3.0\u00a0CSL, which had been specifically designed for motor sport. The coup\u00e9 was the top model of BMW\u2019s great coup\u00e9 series launched in 1968 and it was an exceptionally successful touring car.
