{"id":24140,"date":"2022-06-09T00:04:07","date_gmt":"2022-06-09T04:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=24140"},"modified":"2022-06-09T00:04:07","modified_gmt":"2022-06-09T04:04:07","slug":"walmart-daimler-cummins-electric-hydrogen-natural-gas-trucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/autosector.com\/?p=24140","title":{"rendered":"Walmart expands electric, hydrogen, natural-gas truck testing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Freightliner&#8217;s eCascadia battery-electric semi.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Retail giant Walmart on Wednesday said it was expanding transportation pilot programs with manufacturers of electric, <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/hydrogen\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:0;\">hydrogen<\/a> and natural gas-powered vehicles, including <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/cummins\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:1;\">Cummins<\/a> and <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tag\/daimler\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:2;\">Daimler<\/a> Truck&#8217;s Freightliner.<\/p>\n<p>The partnerships, which are in addition to previously announced transportation tie-ups, are part of Walmart&#8217;s 2040 goal to achieve zero <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/emissions\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:3;\">emissions<\/a> across its global operations, including its fleet of roughly 10,000 tractors and 80,000 trailers.<\/p>\n<p>A larger number of companies have been pushing into the growing commercial EV space in an effort to slash emissions. But Walmart&#8217;s U.S. senior vice president, Fernando Cortes, cautioned the company was in the early phase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re still in the testing stage and trying these technologies,&#8221; Cortes said. &#8220;We know that for us to decarbonize our fleet, there&#8217;s no one solution that can get us really to scale and that&#8217;s ready to give us that future that we want.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Walmart said it will receive an unspecified number of Cummins&#8217; new 15-liter <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/natural-gas\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:4;\">natural gas<\/a> engines early next year, which the retailer plans to build into its <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/truck\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:5;\">trucks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart said it had signed an agreement with Chevron Corp to supply compressed natural gas.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart said it also plans to run a battery-powered pilot this summer using Freightliner&#8217;s eCascadia and Nikola Corp&#8217;s Tre BEV heavy-duty trucks at one of its California distribution centers.<\/p>\n<p>It also plans to test hydrogen-fuel-cell-powered yard trucks by Texas-based Capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer in January announced it had reserved 5,000 electric delivery vans with <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/category\/gm\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:6;\">General Motors<\/a>&#8216; commercial EV business BrightDrop.<\/p>\n<p>Walmart Canada in 2020 said it had placed reservations for 130 of <a class=\"injectedLinkmain\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autoblog.com\/tesla\/\" data-ylk=\"elm:context_link;itc:0;pos:1;sec:donut-hole;cpos:7;\">Tesla<\/a> Inc&#8217;s Semi trucks, but the EV leader has yet to start manufacturing the Semi.<\/p>\n<p>Cortes said Walmart U.S. was trying to understand which solutions worked best in its fleet. &#8220;We do have the option to purchase Tesla&#8217;s electric Semi trucks, but we not have shared any public commitments,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Freightliner&#8217;s eCascadia battery-electric semi.\u00a0 Retail giant Walmart on Wednesday said it was expanding transportation pilot programs with manufacturers of electric, hydrogen and natural gas-powered vehicles, including Cummins and Daimler Truck&#8217;s Freightliner.
