Eventually, millions of tons of lithium-ion batteries that power those cars will reach their end of life. EverBatt is an Excel-based model that evaluates cost and environmental impacts for the various lifecycle stages of a Li-ion battery.<\/p>\n<p>Qiang and moderator\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/profile\/john-harvey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Harvey<\/a>, commercialization programs manager at Argonne, will describe how to improve the costs \u2013 and greenhouse gas emissions \u2013 of recycling batteries.<\/p>\n<p>The US Department of Energy\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/recellcenter.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ReCell Center<\/a>\u00a0is creating new ways to recycle old batteries. One of the best ways is to retain a battery cathode\u2019s structure. This can cut costs by nearly one-third while using almost two-thirds less energy.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2021, ReCell researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/article\/breakthrough-research-makes-battery-recycling-more-economical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> that they developed an innovative process for separating the valuable materials that make up the cathode, a battery\u2019s positively charged electrode.
